Cyber Security Series - Laser Bonus

Intro

After doing a Pandemic Series bonus post, I have decided to do the same on this series. Although not enough to make a long post it should make you think.

Laser Spy Devices

Think about it

Many of you make be aware of directional microphones, along with the hijacking of laptop microphones. What many of you may not know about is laser sound capture.

Instead of directional microphones, which can be thwarted with triple glazing and a white noise generator. A laser is pointed at a window and captures the sounds within the room. This is decoded by the receiver that captures the reflected beam.

Such a device has a much greater range than microphones and the technology makes white noise generators less effective. As the decades have passed small lasers can be used and this can include those attached to devices. Xbox kinects are an example of this, although they are more likely to be used to map your 3D environment.

Remember in this age your mobile phone camera can be used to map your environment.

They used this sort of device on Mr. Robot :-)

Haven't seen that episode... yet.

Very interesting! Didn't realise lasers could be used in this form. Wonder how powerful they are and what tissue damage they can inflict on the innocent bystander?

They don't have to be ultra powerful, think of how far a laser pointer can travel. It is usually deployed from a car by agents. The only different is the laser is made invisible to the human eye, but I do not know its done.
