The humor is in who Rube Goldberg was. Rube Goldberg was an American artist, engineer and inventor. He is best known for drawing cartoons in the early twentieth century which are now known as "Rube Goldberg machines". A Rube Goldberg machine would perform a complicated series of steps to perform a simple task. Think of Fred's traps in the Scooby-Doo cartoons for catching ghosts and you get the idea.
