did y'all hear about Verrit?

It's definitely been my favorite meme of the past week.

My fast version of the back story is that a former Clinton campaigner popped up this week with a social media fact verification startup? Yeah, it's about as weird as it sounds, and there's even more to it than that, but my favorite part has been Twitter's response to the startup-- it's been BROOOOOTAL

Pretty immediately the Institute for Progressive Memetics launched a fake Verrit tool that allowed anyone to "verify" anything they wanted, and as one can imagine, the trolling skyrocketed.

The most tragic part of the whole debacle has been the fact that the CEO of said startup seems to be taking the trolls seriously and personally responding to many of them? It's as if this social media startup has never spent a minute on social media.

one of the best memes to come from the PR nightmare

Anyway, as with most memes and jokes, you kinda had to be there, but since there didn't seem to be much other discussion about Verrit here on steem, I thought it was worth starting one! I thought the average Steemian's relationship with authenticity and authority would make this an especially interesting topic.

Have y'all followed the Verrit story? What are your thoughts?
