Dear Steemit Friends,
Today I will share with you my unboxing and first impressions of the Google Wifi - Home Wifi System. I have been wanting to get a full Home Wifi mesh system for a while and was considering this or the Netgear Orbi. I decided to finally go with Google given that it was on sale for $249.00 and came with a gift card at my local Best Buy during their Black Friday Sale.
There are many benefits to using a wifi system like this vs using range extenders attached to your existing wireless configuration. The most beneficial of these reasons is the ability to ensure that all of your connected devices are on the same SSID and the second is to ensure very little to no loss in your signal quality.
Below is a quick unboxing video I made for the Google Wifi.
This 3 device package was the cheapest of all the other Wifi Systems. I also liked how the devices themselves looked vs the other wifi systems available. Each device is roughly 4" in diameter and small enough to place anywhere. Because of their design, they look very clean and decorative.
The package itself comes with the following:
- 3x Google Wifi receivers
- 3x USB-C Power connectors
- 1x Ethernet Cable
- Manuals
The packaging is very minimalist and clean
Each unit has 3 connectors - 1 Wan, 1 Lan, and 1 USB-C power connector.
Each unit has 512MB of RAM and 4GB of eMMC Flash. It has a Quad-core ARM CPU, with each core capable of up to 710 MHz. Each unit weighs approximately 12oz and consumes about 9 Watts of power. The build quality of each unit seems very sturdy and robust and can be placed just about anywhere that you need a wireless signal.
Setting up the unit is easy and fairly self-explanatory at least if you are just looking for basic connectivity. You simply need to select one of the hubs as your primary and plug one end of the provided ethernet port into the Wan port of the hub and the other end of the cable into your DSL/Cable modem.
You will then need to download the Google Wifi App onto your Smart Phone and follow the steps to complete setup.
The following video walks you through the entire process:
After following the App to set up my wifi, which only took about 30 minutes - mostly because I was debating on where in my house I should place each hub, the wifi worked flawlessly. I did, however, notice that my speed was not as fast as the speed I got on my AT&T provided Wifi router, but after troubleshooting and reviewing a few links online, I found it was mainly because I did not disable the wifi broadcasting on my AT&T wireless router which helped to improve the speeds.
The App itself does help you identify the best places to put each hub, or any additional hub you add to your mesh system and provides easy access to all your network information and configurations. Since setup, I have not had any issues with the devices and the wifi signal remains constant all throughout the entire house and even in places such as my garage and backyard.
Because I have this system, I also decided to purchase the Google Home and various other home automation peripherals, which I will review in future posts. Setup was fairly easy, but I don't think I have the whole ecosystem completely perfected yet. As I proceed to optimize and fine tune everything, I hope to share with you any nuggets of experience that I gain from my tinkering and experimenting.
As of this writing, I would highly recommend buying the Google Wifi system if you are in the market for a more affordable and reliable solution to whole home wifi. It works well using the starter pack and is easy to expand as your needs grow.
I hope you enjoyed my review of the Google Wifi Home System. If you have any questions, inputs, or feedback, please feel free to post a comment below. I would also appreciate your Upvote, Follow, and Resteem if you feel this post was informative and will help others.
