Flat-Earther's steam-powered rocket lofts him 1,875 feet up into Mojave Desert sky

in technology •  7 years ago

From LA Times

He finally went up — just like the self-taught rocket man always pledged he would.

He came back down in one piece too — a little dinged up and his steam-powered vessel a little cracked up.

Still, mission accomplished for a guy more daredevil than engineer, who drew more comparisons to the cartoon character Wile E. Coyote from his critics than he did to iconic stunt man Evel Knievel.

"Mad" Mike Hughes, the rocket man who believes the Earth is flat, propelled himself about 1,875 feet into the air Saturday before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert. He told the Associated Press that outside of an aching back he's fine after the launch near Amboy, Calif.

Well he finally did it. Or did he? Apparently almost everything was caught on footage except for this man actually entering the capsule. I guess we'll all have to buy the documentary in August to find out more!

I also haven't seen him commenting on whether or not he still believes the Earth to be flat after being up there.

So, after all this time, effort, money spent... He comes back and no comment to be made? :-/ What a turn off... Or maybe he has seen something so HUGE... like the Earth is in the shape of a pyramid, Illuminati style? who knows... Can't wait August and fork out 99.99$ for his groundbreaking documentary

😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Um, ya. He could have saved himself a ton of money, bruises and contusions and possible death by just going up in a hot air balloon in the first place

It was foolish and nothing more than a stunt, nothing scientific that can be proven from it other than the fact that gravity exists.

It'll be interesting when/if he goes up in the helium balloon... and into the mesosphere. I wounder/hope flat earthers will get behind him to help fund that... If that community does not, it would certainly say a lot.

I guarantee it would be next to impossible for him to think the Earth is flat after seeing the curvature for himself. If he survives this next stunt... Don't think you can backyard it into near space. He's going to need some serious support and dollars. Time to stand up flat earth community.

From what I've read, he's not actually a flat earther; he's just opportunistic about funding his rocketry hobby. Apparently before the flat Earth community funded him he had never questioned the globe earth before.

But yeah, clearly not a lot of science happening here :)

I agree, I wrote a post on his near launch last year and said as much. Definitely opportunistic - and from both sides. I think flat earther's saw an opportunity, but I think "Mad" Mike also saw an opportunity to milk some dollars. A guy to watch, if nothing for the cojones on the man.

This is awesome that the man has the will to do this

Props to him

He has a lot of sponsoring and nobody really knows if he was in the capsule or not ... Anyway, why not send some camera instead of going by himself ? A weather balloon with a camera will do the job really well ... just saying :-)

will is the correct word there, the earth has been bent to the will of man

This is smashingly incredible:

He finally went up — just like the self-taught rocket man always pledged he would.
He came back down in one piece too — a little dinged up and his steam-powered vessel a little cracked up.

It seemed like poetry yet it was conveying the essence of some amazing feats!

That is 1875 feet more than I would go up in a steam powered tin can. Geez he could have gotten the same perspective by taking a flight in a Cessna. However I do admit he has some big brass ones....

Man of deed. Finally he did it.

Nice photos. they deserve an award. It is very nice. great workU5dtKDTgGtNzS63xMp5eKYFjiqEDjGx_1680x8400.png

Apa yang mematikan ... Atau mungkin dia telah melihat sesuatu yang sangat BESAR ... seperti Bumi dalam bentuk piramida, gaya Illuminati? siapa yang tahu

So is it flat or what ? It was the point ...
