Tech-news: Apple's WWDC 2018 Recap - Slow and steady wins the race

Hi fellow Steemians!

Apple has held its annual WWDC key note for 2018 and has introduced new software features for its iOS system. Although the company didn't introduce any new hardware or any ground-breaking new features, they're still worth looking at. Let's take a look at them.

iOS 12 - optimization

As expected, Apple has introduced the iOS 12 and with it, a bunch of new features. Many are new to this industry and many seem familiar, taking clues from its fiercest rival Android. Here are some key points to take note of.

  • Less phone addiction
Similar to what Android introduced with the Android P, Apple will help users become less addicted to their phones by setting timers on app usage.
  • Grouped notification
Something that users have been waiting for quite some time. Now notifications can be grouped by apps and won't clutter your valuable space.
  • Performance enhancement
Probably the most important change with the new iOS. It will work on devices from iPhone 5S and up and will allow your phone to open apps 40% faster, open the camera 70% faster from the lock screen and keyboard appears 50% faster.
  • Animoji & Memoji
Your iPhone X (and the future iPhones with 3D face detection) can now detect your tongue and show it to you in an animation, because why not? They've also introduced 4 new Animoji characters, ghost, koala, tiger and T-Rex. There's also 'Memoji', which make a 3D emoji of your own face... Not quite what a 'meme' is, but if Apple does it then nothing else matters right? It's actually quite similar to what Samsung's done with their implementation. So Samsung copied Apple and now Apple's copying Samsung back?
  • 32 people Facetime... At the same time!
You can now video chat with 32 people simultaneously. i don't think I even know 32 people in real life that I need to video chat with...

Augmented Reality (AR)

Apple has introduced a new app called Measure, which uses Apple's AR algorithms to measure the dimensions of real-world objects. A very neat tool that will be useful I'm sure. There are also other integration of and support for AR in iOS 12 but for everyday user, Measure is all that's needed for now.

Photos

Apple introduced an improved Photos app which features the ability to deliver suggestions before you start typing, highlighting important people or events, a "For you" tab which highlights photos you've taken and suggesting effects for the photos and inviting friends to share an album. All quite similar to Google's photo app.

News and Stocks

For iPad (Neither I nor Apple forgot about you!), you will now be able to use a new sidebar which lets you jump quickly from one news source to another. The stocks app will now integrate news, suggesting relevant news articles while you monitor stocks.

Supported devices

Conclusion

While no significant new innovations have been introduced, Apple has fine-tuned its existing features. Probably the biggest change is optimization of iOS, which was a much needed change. Apple has always been known for their well optimized OS, but in recent years iOS had been plagued with bugs and performance issues. Now Apple seems to be sticking back to its roots in time for the introduction of new devices coming in a few months!
