This video discusses how cities may change in the face of uncertain future food, energy and water supplies. It is presented by Christopher Barnatt, Associate Professor of Computing & Future Studies in Notingham University Business School.
With smart planning surface farming and around the cities could provide for the nutrition needed by the residents of the cities and surrounding areas.
A number of countries in asia are already implementing vertical farming. It hasn't reached critical mass yet whereby most of cities food is acquired through city farming and greenhouses.
Right now skyscapers in most big cities only collect rent. At least by having hydroponics or vertical greenhouses it would make skyscrapers productive and would be an integral part of city living, by providing a food source close to the cities residents.

I think plants should totally be incorporated into buildings (mainly food but pretty things to support pollinators as well, and pretty is good for people's psyche too XD). Quite like the idea of vertical farms.

The characters in my animation project (or at least the current part I'm working in) live in a "green" city, where plants and community gardens are incorporated into building/city design, and they have bioluminescent trees for street lights (and some smaller bioluminescent plants for internal mood lighting). That's the kind of thing I'd like to head towards within our lifetimes, preferably without the apocalyptic event I dealt them to get there XD

Hi Katrina, thank you.
I have an interest in making our cities more sustainable too and am interested in the impact of new technology on cities, I guess my interest comes from being a town planner. I am following you too, as I like yoga and meditation aswell.
