Why do people still use Facebook?

We all know the very notorious Cambridge Analytica scandal and Facebook's position in the US Elections.

Then, there was that time #deletefacebook was a thing and people did go through with deleting it, but I think they only deleted the app or jumped to Instagram (Facebook subsidiary).

Personally, I deleted my Facebook last year, well before this all ever happened because I simply didn't use it often.

And yet, after all of this has happened in addition to the data breaches they've been dealing with, my family is still using Facebook.

Meanwhile, here I am, on Mastodon and disapora*, happy that I found a place where privacy's a focus in addition to using Wire and Signal.

Don't get me wrong, I still use Messenger (without Facebook) but that's family stuff. I could get them to move to Signal, but I just don't think they'd be willing to do it despite Signal's simple interface.

I also use Silence for my SMS texts, but I don't know anyone who uses it so that I could try the encryption function, so... yeah. :-/

I just wish my family was worried about their own digital privacy and move away from Facebook.
