3D Printed Car Parts

in technology •  7 years ago

Here are some pretty large automotive parts printed on our large frame 3D printers. These parts are used in the design stage to validate prototypes from a design, aesthetic and sometimes even a functional standpoint. This means car manufacturers bolt these 3D printed parts to the chassis of the cars drive them around to perform tests. Once the tests are passed then expensive molds and dies are made to mass produce these parts for the assembly line.

However, in recent times, car manufacturers have started using 3D printed parts in the final products as well. This makes sense for limited editions of cars. An example is Ferrari which had a limited production of a particular model of just 20 cars. So they asked us to print 20 sets of headlight assemblies instead of spending all that money to produce the tooling for just 20 sets of parts and maybe a couple of prototypes.

Dag for @cheetah with the whole copy and paste thing. Either way I think its crazy the possibility we have with these printers now.

Indeed. This greatly reduced the time to market. Previously this was done by carving wood or styrofoam blocks. A small design change meant everything needed to be redone. Now, just tweak the design in the software and hit print.

I can't wait until the larger printers come down in cost or at least the parts to make them. Not sure if you'd seen the houses being made but figured these are worth a share. The first is of a guy that made a cool castle in his back yard and the other is company in China that made a mansion from 3d printing.

Indeed. This technology started out as a prototyping application. But now it is advancing into the manufacturing sphere. I don't think it will completely replace traditional manufacturing in the near future. But it will nicely augment it.
