Gigabyte has announced the GA-SBCAP3350 micro-computer. Measuring 146 x 102mm the device is almost double the size of a Raspberry Pi which currently measures 85 x 56mm.
Unlike the Pi (Apart from the SD card) the GA-SBCAP3350 is to all intents and purposes a bare-bone device which will be of interest to those who like to custom build their systems. The GA-SBCAP3350 comes without memory of which it can take up to an 8GB module along with a mini PCIe slot for connecting an mSATA SSD drive; there is also a second slot for a half-length Wi-Fi card.
The board comes with an Intel Celeron N3350 CPU, dual-core clocked to 1.1GHz with turbo boost up to 2.4GHz. However, the CPU has been soldered to the board which, in theory, means it is not upgradeable. The board comes with two USB 3.0 ports, plus expansion for four more USB 2.0 connections available using pin headers on the board. Networking is via dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and video is available either by VGA or HDMI, interestingly the HDMI can make 4K resolution @30Hz.
Kind of blows my #FrankenPi out the water.:-D

Eventually 'the big boys' will make an i7 board the size of a matchbox and the Pi will be relegated to what it was originally designed for. A throwaway code learning tool rather than the vast majority of efforts to get them to work out the GDP of Russia. :-D
