Improving Search And Rescue Efforts With Drones

in technology •  7 years ago

We can already see drones being used today in a myriad of different ways in the market. They are being used to deliver medical supplies, helping farmers to survey land, assisting crews in cleaning up after accidents, contributing to a search and rescue efforts, and plenty more.

Who knew that this technology could make its way into so many industries, this quickly, and yet there are still talks of big ideas that are yet to be fully realized.

You've got football teams using drones, the police, Coast Guard, real estate firms, private individuals, fire fighters, wildlife conservation centers; hundreds of different organizations out there are using drones.

After the recent hurricane hit Texas, drones have helped in a big way to survey the damage and land area. And the same thing happened in Florida, and Puerto Rico. For the recent weather disasters in those areas, the FAA issued hundreds of authorizations for drone operators to use the device in the disaster area.

They didn't just survey the land either, they were also used to help rescue teams execute their search and rescue missions.

The drones helped save time and money when it came to searching for people who were trapped and who might have needed supplies etc. If there was an area that might have otherwise been inaccessible for the rescue teams to travel to, the drone would have come in handy in a big way—and they did.

Puerto Rico also experimented with using drones to inspect cell tower damage, and utilizing a drone to temporarily restore service by acting as an equipment replacement; hovering in the area to service the phones nearby.

Just recently,...

drones in Australia helped lifeguards there rescue two swimmers who were stranded offshore. The drone was able to assist the rescue team by dropping a rescue pod to the swimmers in the water, which then inflated. The drone they used was the Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver UAV.

Coincidentally, lifeguards had been in the area for a drone training session, that quickly turned into a more serious situation.

They were able to carry-out the drone rescue within 1-2 minutes. And when even seconds can make the difference between life or death, in an emergency rescue scenario, drones could help to possibly save a lot of lives.

They've also been using drones across Australia, and in other regions, to assist with looking for sharks and crocodiles.

Drones are able to improve on search and rescue efficiency immensely.

It's estimated that they could help to improve on speed by more than 80 percent, compared to traditional search methods. No doubt many search and rescue teams, lifeguards etc, will continue to use this technology well into the future if it proves successful in improving the quality of their work--if they see better results.

As far as searching for missing people, helping drowning swimmers, or delivering life-saving medical supplies that could get to you much faster than an ambulance, it's clear that this technology has the capability to help save many people from danger and be able to assist them in a time when they need it most.

It hasn't all been rosy...

There are many very valid concerns that people have when it comes to drones and their use, concerns about privacy, potential collisions, and much more.

We've got drones operating in various countries overseas that aren't helping, but rather destroying communities and lives with their military activities. Unfortunately, these drones continue to operate with a fail-rate of more than 90 percent. And yet we continue. I'd much rather see this technology used to help people and improve our standard of living, than being used to initiate violence against mostly innocent civilians.

Despite the worries that some have and the possibility for misuse, it's still an incredible technology that's been able to really impact our way of living in a variety of ways. But the people themselves are ultimately going to decide, with their support or lack of it, whether this is a trend that is going to flourish, or one that is going to eventually fizzle out.

Weaponized drones by malicious actors are a real concern. Imagine someone like the Vegas shooter but with the know-how to strap a bomb to a drone! Now that is a frightening thought.

i'm more worried about the people with positions of authority today who are doing much worse with the same technology. under the guise of "spreading freedom" or whatever the current excuse is...

Good point. I'm sure even terrorists with weaponized drones will not be able to do as much damage as the CIA lawyers who are authorizing these drone strikes that take out 1 supposedly high-value target while killing 10 civilians in the process - including children. It's fucked up!

Your Power is amazing ....You are steem millioner :P

I think it's very positive that technology is used to improve rescue and exploration techniques! days ago I also saw some drones in australia that alert people if there are sharks on the beach. something great!

The Future is now !!

good technology friend

Drones are really useful, however i'm concerned that one day those drones will be invisible and it will be used to follow people, film everything and private life will become a history.

Undoubtedly, it is one of the technological advances that most benefit our generation, if it is used for entertainment, it has much better use for more necessary occasions, such as saving lives, or finding people, excellent.

Awesome life saving devices drones are. And a lot of fun too!

Nice post...

good stuff, that Australia story from just recently was an awesome story. Every technology will have its good and bad. I think the bad drones have already been dropping bombs, lets have some good drones that save people and can help replace needing people in dangerous situations.

Will there be a time when drones swoop down and grabs a person standing at a bridge considering suicide.. Will ther be drones that are just out in bad weather looking for dangerous situations to swoop into and save the day. How far will these drones go..?

There will always be the potential for a good thing to be used for evil purposes. Keep the tools, eliminate the evil people!

There’s a growing community of hobbyists who build and fly their own drones.

Some people are tinkering with ways for drones to deliver tacos, and even build towers.

It's amazing too see that technology is being used for good purposes, as it should be...Unfortunately, it is always used for some bad ones too, but it is encouraging to see all these things that drons can do, as it originally wasn't really a primary idea when drones came out...I actually stumbled on a tv documentary few days ago, amd it was exactly this case on Australia...
It's also used for some fun things- check out drone surfing :)

Thanks for helping spreading the good aspects of technology and unmanned systems!

A good way to make the most of it from drones!

What could be more important than human lives! I'm very glad that drones have found such a good use!
