With the help of drones and Wi-Fi you can visualize the interior of the building in 3D

As it turns out, Wi-Fi can serve us not only as a source of Internet access. A team of researchers from the University of California at Santa Barbara used them to create three-dimensional scans of building interiors.

Well, it looks like Wi-Fi can have many uses. Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara's Mostofi Laboratory have created a system that can "peep" into buildings with two drones and Wi-Fi.

To view the interior of the building (without peering into the window), researchers equipped their drones with Wi-Fi transmitters. A pair of such drones is sent around the target object. One UAV transmits a Wi-Fi signal and the other receives it. By analyzing the signal distortion and the delays that are generated along the way, the software recreates the shape and location of obstacles. The results are impressive - thanks to this method a three-dimensional image of the interior of the building is obtained.

Mostofi's University of California Santa Barbara laboratory is familiar with using radio waves to penetrate walls. In 2010, its researchers published their first demonstration of imaging using Wi-Fi. "However, imaging the interior of real buildings in 3D is much more challenging, due to the significant increase in the number of unknowns," said Professor Yasamin Mostofi.

Systems like Mostofi's Laboratory could help rescue teams in crisis situations, such as analyzing collapsed or severely damaged buildings without exposing their members to unnecessary danger. The laboratory also claims that their method could be used in archaeological exploration, and not only.
