What Technology Will Transform the World in 2018? [Poll]

In the article January Poll: What Technology Will Transform the World in 2018? its author, Joey Dupont asked a question and suggested five possible answers:

3D Printing
Augmented Reality Glasses
Autonomous Cars
Hyperloop Train
Robots and Artificial Intelligence

I am not diminishing these five categories.

I do miss the sixth possible answer:

Blockchain enabled services and solutions

I don't know if Joey was more oriented towards hardware side of up and coming technologies or perhaps he just didn't want to go into hype mode.

I do believe that 2018 will finally bring us useful cases of real life blockchain technology application.

I am not talking about cryptocurrencies. I am talking about utility in your actual daily chores and situations. It is a high time, after all.

The new applications of Artificial Intelligence will certainly have an effect on our society as a whole, but the main question is how will we be able to make use of it and make a positive impact on the future.

Yes, AI will get under our collective skin. As internet did.

How do you define a positive impact? Is positive meant financially, culturally, sociologically, ...? I know I am being a bit provocative ;)

Artificial intelligence can affect all of the things that you have mentioned in a positive way if we use it in the right way.

I would describe positive impact as a mean of collective growth, and development. Where people could use a decentralized system to share their knowledge and find new ways for the collective development of humanity. Artificial intelligence can extend some of our capabilities to do things better and more efficiently, but the question still remains if the technology will be available for everyone equally and will not be used to exploit others.

AI & Machine Learning systems, although the effect will be more hidden in the devices & technologies that we use.

Second for me is blockchain, but it depends on their current battle with government & banks this year & the depth of their adoption into current technologies.

3D Printing, maybe after 2020.

Augmented Reality Glasses needs a killer app to really break into the market.

Autonomous Cars, depends more on legal regulation rather than the technology.

Hyperloop Train, if it finishes this year, and only where it is being built.

Thank you very much for a thorough answer.

I agree with you that the embedded usage of technologies is more important and has more effect that the frontend hype.

The technology is really adopted when we use it without even thinking about it.

I don't believe that 2018 will bring such level of acceptance for any of the above mentioned areas. They will progress with different speeds as you validly pointed out.

I believe 3D printing & augmented reality glasses (Glassholes?) have had their fair share of prominence and are no longer world changing technologies.

Autonomous cars and trucks may start real world use beyond trials in 2018.
They have the potential to be world changing and with some painful impact on the employment of drivers.

Hyperloop may still need some time to become world changing. Trials will still continue and we will get regular updates on their progress lest we forget about this tech.

Robots & AI in the form of drones will be world changing in 2018. From their use in warfare with swarm tech, in entertainment with large public displays, extended use in manufacturing 4.0, supply chain logistics for ecommerce & more.

Blockchain will be aching for better use cases beyond value storage in Bitcoins. The Ethereum platform after the planned forks may lead the way in causing a tectonic shift with blockchain tech in 2018. Steemit will cautiously be adopted by various service providers. Fundamental issues with centralisation, abuse fueled by wealthy Steemians and reward pool plunder will have to be addressed expeditiously in 2018 for the Steemit platform to succeed.
