My Secure Services to Replace Gmail, Dropbox and Google Chrome

in technology •  7 years ago  (edited)

Once upon a time, I was using tools such as Dropbox to save my documents, Google Chrome to browse the internet and Gmail as my email provider.

Since then I was always looking for good, secure and encrypted alternatives.

I finally found the following services and it's a perfect mix of privacy and features!

Note: None of them are US based services.

Protonmail

Protonmail is a secure email based in Switzerland.

Open source, end-to-end encryption, Swiss privacy and anonymous.

This service is amazing and the team behind it works really hard to implement new features or improvements.

Tresorit

This one is a beauty. An end-to-end encrypted file sync and sharing service.

I tried SpiderOak but find a bit hard to implement and not really user-friendly.

Tresorit has great applications and is really simple to implement and use.

I don't miss Dropbox at all with Tresorit:

Upload your files to tresors, your unbreakable folders in the cloud. Unlike Dropbox, you don't need to change the folder structure you already have on your computer.
Replace risky email attachments with encrypted links. Send files & folders with secure links and protect them with a download limit, expiry date and passwords.

Brave

My latest discovery :)

I was always adding a ton of extensions on chrome or firefox (https everywhere, adblock, ghostery, ...) and then finally Brave was released.

The new Brave browser automatically blocks ads and trackers, making it faster and safer than your current browser.

Again a great product, still a work in progress on some key features (sync between pc and mobile) but I can't live without it on all my devices.

Example news page data and load time with tracking allowed and normal ads allowed.

Same page data and load time with tracking blocked and normal ads blocked.

NordVPN

This one might change overtime because the team behind Protonmail has just released ProtonVPN and I'm looking forward to try to use it as soon as an app is available on smartphone and mac.

In the meantime, I'm using NordVPN and it works well on all devices.

A feature I like is the Kill Switch, where you decide applications to kill when the VPN connection drops.

That's it!

What about you do you use other secure services ?

By the way I'm still looking for a secure photos management app, so if you know one I'm all ears!

Informative post. Free VPN services are not worth it. NordVPN is a great choice because it's easy to use and it works.
