The technological advance of the last decades has been impressive. The problem is that adapting these latest advances to the current cities is quite complex due to its disposition, designed centuries ago in many of them. Therefore, Google wants to make a 21st century city in Canada, with technology in mind.
Sidewalk Toronto: the city of the future located in southeastern Canada
It has been Sidewalk Labs, which is part of Alphabet, the matrix that encompasses Google and all its projects, who has made an agreement to create a smart city in Toronto. Specifically, it will be located in an area close to the sea, and it will be a laboratory to see how intelligent technology can work better with each other in a real environment.
Thus, in this city, Internet availability through fiber optics and Wi-Fi hotspots will be available for all possible points. Thousands of sensors would also be installed, as well as renewable energy sources for the city's electricity needs. There is nothing written about electric vehicles, but you would expect them to be that way, as well as self-employed.
These types of cities are currently only viable through private investment, since public investment to create this type of areas with the latest technology is conspicuous by its absence. One of the few examples in this area is Masdar, a city located in the United Arab Emirates that is totally self-sufficient at the energy level and also seeks to be self-sufficient in the future.
Google is going to move its Canadian headquarters there
The project, which will be known as Sidewalk Toronto, was well received by the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said that this area will be an excellent testing ground for new technologies. The initial dimensions of the project will be about 48.5 square kilometers. With this, the Quayside of Toronto, which is one of the most underdeveloped urban areas in North America and located on the edge of Lake Ontario, is being developed further. In addition, Toronto is a very diverse and dynamic city, and is currently in full growth.
Unlike Masdar, Sidewalk Toronto has better communications thanks to a greater proximity of large cities such as Toronto itself, Ottawa, Montreal, Detroit, or even New York and Boston. Google will move its Canadian headquarters to this new area in which homes, offices and commercial spaces will be created. Sidewalk Labs has affirmed that the initial investment will be of 50 million dollars.
Sidewalk Labs is likely to sound like old projects that we have mentioned some time ago in ADSLZone, such as the idea of converting old booths into high speed WiFi access points in New York. Its initial objective is to improve the lives of citizens in cities, and therefore this new project becomes a key axis of that goal.
Well, this sounds interesting. I am a young french engineer and if this project really take place I would be glad to go live there :)
When are they supposed to start building it? When do they plan to be operating as a city?
