It's not called Scorpio anymore. The new Xbox will be called Xbox One X and arrives on November 7 with a price of US $ 499.
One year after revealing the existence of the so-called Project Scorpio, Microsoft finally put an end to its 4K-capable super-console and introduced it at E3 in Los Angeles as the Xbox One X. One surprise is that, in addition to being powerful, the Xbox One X is the smallest console in the history of the line.
In April, Microsoft revealed some of the specifications of the video game system April:
*CPU: Eight x86 custom cores with 2.3GHz speed
*GPU: 40 custom 1.172MHz computing units
*Memory RAM: 12GB type GGDR5
*Memory Bandwidth: 326GBps
*Storage unit: 1TB (2.5 inches)
*Disk drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray compatible
*Asking Price: US $ 499
¿What do they mean by updates?
According to Microsoft, the Xbox One X will not have any exclusive game. Not one. Instead, the One x will have the same games that you can play on an Xbox or Xbox One S, but some of them in much greater fidelity. With 4.5 times the power of an original Xbox One, Microsoft claims that the Xbox One X can run those same games at an ultra high-definition 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.
Compare this with the current Xbox One, which still struggles to release many games in 1,920x1,080 pixels (1080p) resolution. Scorpio is a bit like putting a new PC video card into your game console.
¿Will all my Xbox One games run on 4K?
Not necessarily. Games should be designed to take advantage of the higher resolution, and Microsoft says it will not force developers to make that happen.
However, Microsoft says some of the new games are already being developed with the Xbox One X in mind, and the console will also unlock the potential of a handful of existing titles. Games like Halo 5, The Division, The Witcher 3 and Doom dynamically reduce their graphics every time the Xbox One can not handle the load.
With the Xbox One X, there will be no need for that. Microsoft says that games that use dynamic scaling will be consistently better than before.
¿But does the Xbox One S already play 4K images?
Yes and no. The Xbox One S can display 4K images on your TV, but that's not the same as providing 4K games. Or, put simply, you can see Blu-rays 4K using an Xbox One S, but the games will not look much better.
Still, the One S is now compatible with HDR (high dynamic range) with a handful of games, which must suppose saturation of the color and the contrast in those titles, as long as you have an HDR compatible TV.
Why should developers work with Scorpio instead of with the Xbox One?
Game developers already work for a wide variety of Windows PCs, and the Xbox One X is just one more point in that trend. The same game that runs on an Xbox One (with an estimated 1.33 teraflops graphics performance) needs to run on an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 9 teraflops, and on an AMD RX480 6-teraflops graphics card as well. (That last comparison can be particularly useful since Scorpio also has an AMD GPU of 6 teraflops).
And do not forget that Microsoft is trying to merge the worlds of the PC and the game console, some games will be designed for both Xbox and Windows from the beginning.
AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card.
¿Will my Xbox One X games work with the Xbox One X?
Yes, even the oldest. "This console will play Ryse: Son of Rome, a launching game for your Xbox One," Microsoft executive Phil Spencer told Eurogamer.
¿Which games will receive an update for the Xbox One X?
*Forza Motorsport 7: It will have 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. It arrives on Xbox and Windows 10 on October 3, but updates for the One X arrive a little later.
*Metro Exodus: It will have 4K resolution.
*Assassin's Creed Origins: Will have 4K resolution.
*PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: Reaches the Xbox One in late 2017 and will have upgrades for the One X.
*Deep Rock Galactic: It will have 4K resolution.
*State of Decay 2: Will have 4K resolution. Windows 10 and Xbox.
*Minecraft: It will have 4K resolution. With a new graphics pack on both Windows 10 and Xbox One X.
*Dragon Ball FighterZ: Improvements for the Xbox One X.
*Black Desert: The MMORPG: It will have 4K resolution.
*The Last Night: It will have 4K resolution.
*CodeVein: A few improvements for the Xbox One X.
*Sea of Thieves: It will have 4K resolution. Windows 10 and Xbox.
*Super Lucky's Tale: It will have 4K resolution.
*Crackdown 3: It will have 4K resolution. Windows 10 and Xbox.
*Middle-Earth: Shadow of War: It will have 4K resolution. Windows 10 and Xbox.
*Anthem: It will have 4K resolution.
In addition, these Xbox One games will have some enhancements for the Xbox One X:
*Gears of War 4
*Forza Horizon 3
*Killer Instinct
*Halo Wars 2
*Final Fantasy XV
*Resident Evil 7
*Ghost Recon: Wildlands
*Rocket League.
¿And what about the accessories on my Xbox One? Will I need to buy more controls?
Microsoft says that every accessory for the Xbox One should work, too. "Our commitment is to make sure all games and accessories work on all platforms," Microsoft's Mike Ybarra told The Guardian in July.
¿What about the other 200 older games on the Xbox 360 that were updated to work with the Xbox One?
Microsoft has not said anything about it, but we believe the growing library of Xbox 360-compatible games - including Alan Wake, Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption - will also work.
What if I do not have a 4K TV?
You may be better off with your original Xbox One. "Scorpio [now Xbox One X] is designed to be a 4K console and if you do not have a 4K TV, you will not see the benefit for which we designed it," Phil Spencer told Eurogamer. But you may want to play your Xbox One X games on VR.
Virtual reality?
Yes. Microsoft says that one of the reasons why you are using such a powerful graphics chip is so you can drive a virtual reality device. We are not sure what type of appliance it is. However, in May, a rumor suggested that Microsoft would partner with Facebook to support the Oculus Rift headset. But when the Xbox One X was officially announced in June (still under the name of Project Scorpio), Microsoft said it would be able to play Fallout 4 in VR, a title that has so far only confirmed for rival Oculus, the HTC Spectacles Lives.
Or maybe the Xbox One X will simply be compatible with any virtual reality device you connect to. After all, the Xbox One runs on Windows 10 and Microsoft plans to make Windows 10 computers compatible with virtual reality headphones starting next year.
Either way, you should not wait for virtual reality experiences to be much better than an existing line of VR-ready PCs. In our analysis of the AMD RX480 graphics card (again, same performance of 6 teraflops of the Xbox One X) we found that it was barely good enough for today's virtual reality.
By the way, virtual reality could be the exception to the rule "there will be no exclusive games for Scorpio [Xbox One X]". Because the original Xbox One and Xbox One S are not VR compatible, any virtual reality experience could be unique to the new console.
What are Sony and Nintendo doing these days?
Sony could soon announce the PlayStation Neo a new console, ready for virtual reality and this could happen as early as September. In addition, the expected Nintendo NX from Nintendo would be ready to arrive in March.
