The curse of BlackBerry is alive and kicking

in technology •  7 years ago

The Chinese manufacturer of TCL phones began selling BlackBerrys this year, and its market share in the United States is sinking. Motorola, on the other hand, is coming back.

In recent years BlackBerry phones became irrelevant, as consumers opted for more eye-catching offers from Apple or Samsung.

Some things never change.

TCL, a Chinese company known for its cheap televisions, as well as for its affordable phones under its Alcatel brand, earlier this year undertook the ambitious project to revive the BlackBerry brand. The result: the company saw its market share fall in the third quarter.

Apple and Samsung dominate the premium market with their iPhone and Galaxy S. But there is also a fierce fight, as consumers seek the best bargains and there is a battle for who can pack the best components and features for the lowest price.
TCL, which benefited from the momentum last year, was about to have a solid 2017 with the addition of BlackBerry to its portfolio. The company launched its first BlackBerry phone, the BlackBerry KeyOne, in February during an event in Barcelona. Showing that he was committed to the brand, presented in October the BlackBerry Motion, a touchscreen phone.

It has not caused much of a stir, and it did not help that the KeyOne had a tendency to see its screen turn off.
