The other day, me and my partner (ate-bit-dave) went thrifting for the 1st time in a while, he stumbled upon some VHS movies from the 80's/90's and he felt compelled to purchase them for some nostalgic feels. With bringing up the ol' VCR, it brought some nostalgic feels to me as well!
last night I was chatting with my brother about ideas for a new blog post, and he basically said "you can literally blog about anything" and off topic, I was telling him about the VCR.. he told me "there you go, you have a blog post" I laughed and told him there's no way I can make an entire blog post about a freaking VCR... but he basically challenged me to do so and here I am!
The VCR we had was a brand new VCR... (not many people can probably say that), my partner likes retro items and likes to collect things like this. The movie we watch was called "Home Fries" which is a movie from 1998 starring Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson. Cheesy romance movie that got a rating of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes (I personally fell asleep, wasn't a great movie) BUT with that being said, seeing the "rewind" feature in action, the blurred lines on the TV & the noises the machine made definitely brought me back to my childhood. In my opinion, it is now a eye sore in my living room - my appreciation for a device so outdated is not exciting to me in my life, and as Marie Kondo would say "does it bring you joy in life" and it unfortunately DOES NOT!
I had mentioned earlier that it was a "brand new" VCR … I do not believe it was brand new in a box... but brand new, only used maybe a handful of times... while explaining this to my brother he took it upon himself to look up brand new RCA VHS players online... well much to my surprise.. it seems like they are worth some money!!! trust me! I have proof!!
200$ FOR A FREAKING VCR!!?!!?! this is OUTRAGEOUS! The 1st thing that popped into MY head was, who the heck is buying VCRS these days, and why the heck are they so expensive to purchase on eBay?!?!?! well, I suppose they're valuable because no one makes them anymore & people still have VHS tapes to watch, so they'll pay a lot to purchase one? I still think this is a silly thing because they sell them for less the 5$ likely at your local thrift store, and you can normally find multiples of them. I suppose if you are into the collecting world of retro items, you would want a brand new VCR in the box, but to me...
WASTE. OF. MONEY
Growing up VHS's and VCR's are all I knew, DVD's & DVD players were never a thing yet. The only VHS's that I still own to this day are a collection is Disney VHS movies. My mother would purchase them for us growing up, and we are a Disney loving family so she kept them for the future generations to come, not thinking anything better then a VHS will come out. We do own a house out in the country where there is no service for streaming services such as Netflix... so for nostalgic purposes I guess we can hook up the VHS player and watch some Disney movies with our new daughter. When she grows up, I'll one day show her this post and teach her about these big, black, brick like plastic hunks of junk that play awesome movies. let me know in the comments below if you still watch VHS videos, or own/collect retro items like a VCR. But to end this post, I believe I will stick to seeing movies in the theatres and purchasing my favorite DVD's from now on... oh, and watching Netflix cause streaming is the new blockbuster!
Thanks a bunch;
XOXO, MM
I've been transferring my old VHS tapes via VCR to DVD and to hard drives and to the Internet many times. So, this post is one of many.
