To those of us that have been paying attention to the progress self driving technology has made it seems inevitable that many people will lose their jobs. In the United States about 3 million people are truck drivers. What happens when all 3 million people lose their jobs as a result of self driving vehicles?
Personally, I believe that when those 3 million people lose their truck driving jobs millions more will lose their job. Think of all the people whose jobs depends of truck drivers such as convenience store clerks, hotel staff and fast food workers.
I don't think that we can reasonably expect 3 million plus people to become University graduates in a few years time so what do we do as a society? This is a real issue that we need to be thinking about right now. I don't think all these people will just sit back and starve to death so what kind of solutions do you propose?
I think that one potential solution may be basic income because the underlying technology that makes self driving vehicles possible can also be used in many other industries.
Could a basic income via the blockchain be a potential solution?
What are your thoughts?
