You know we all want a free and voluntary society, but a free and voluntary society can already exist withing this current society if people will support it. A free and voluntary society will need voluntary contributions from all of it's members, people have to help eachother with any ways they can, if they don't have money, no problem, there are other ways how people can contribute as well. But people have to contribute in some ways. This is how a voluntary society can be sustained, if everyone does their own part.
Now by far the biggest manifestation of this is the open source community, which overlaps with the cryptocurrency community as well, but not entirely. It's kind of like the same niche, and they both exist to bring transparency, freedom and accessibility to the world.
I think everyone should donate some money to these projects. If you don't have any money, then just promote them on Facebook, or other social media and tell others to donate, or write blogs about them. Not having money is no problem, you can help by spreading the message. But if you do have money, cmon stop wasting 20$ on cigarettes that will give you horrible lung diseases and instead donate that to an open source project. Even that 5$ that you spent on beer, it could have been spent on making certain software more secure and more transparent, thus helping millions of people with it.
You have the power to change the world, you are not powerless, but you must vote with your money, because really that is the only thing you can do, your political vote is worthless. But if you donate 5$,10$,50$,100$ to an open source project, you will do more good for the world than ticking some stupid ballot paper.
Why is Debian very useful?
Debian is pretty much the biggest research and development hub in the Linux community. They have by far the biggest research and development team, creating the Debian OS, researching software vulnerabilities and patching it. Debian I believe works closely with the Linux Foundation, and they test and fix the kernel all the time.
There were many kernel bugs that have been discovered by the Debian research team, all of them are public and transparently disclosed, you can follow it here:
All of these vulnerabilities could be critical, if you run a Debian, or any kind of Linux OS, you are affected by these vulnerabilities, and it's crucial to always keep your system updated. There is real money at stake here, and this team works really hard to find and fix all of these vulnerabilities.
If you run a closed source OS, then you are in much bigger danger, because in that case nobody is transparent about these bugs, and they barely get fixed, since only a handful of people have access to the code.
So you have really no choice but to use Linux based OS, it's infinitely more secure than Windows or Mac. All big players use Linux who are concerned about the safety of their computer. Bank servers, corporate servers, and even governments use only Linux based softwares, because it is secure.
But it is only secure if people are working hard to find bugs and correct them ASAP. So these developers need all the resources they can get, new computers are probably needed to code faster, and a lot of internet or other tech costs are there.
So if you really want to help people have a secure computing environment, and thus helping yourself as well, then you will support them.
You know a lot of people hold 10,000-100,000$ worth of cryptocurrencies on their computer. What would it cost to donate 10-100$ to these developers in order to make sure that bugs and vulnerabilities get fixed faster. Most Steemit users are exposed to this danger too, most of them have very poor computer security, but even if they do have that, a software can still have vulnerability in it, so that has to be fixed fast to minimize the risk that your money is exposed to.
So if you want to help potentially millions of people:
- Donate money to Debian
- Donate hardware to Debian
- Donate your programming skills to Debian
- Contribute or help organize an event
- Share the Debian link on social media and spread the word: https://www.debian.org
