In 2016, Sphero increased production five-fold due to an agreement with Disney, which allowed the company to produce droids from the Star Wars, talking robots in the form of a Spider-Man character and others. However, the festive season of early 2018 did not bring the company the expected profit, reports TechCrunch.

According to the publication, the company sacked 45 employees in the main office of Sphero in Colorado, as well as in the UK and Hong Kong. Representatives of the startup confirmed the changes in the company.

Sphero said that the project plans to focus on the production of products in education. Previously, the company had already created robotics for schools, but later focused on the commercial production of robotic toys.

In June 2017, co-founder and technical director Ian Bernstein left the company, who then founded the Misty Robotics project. According to Bernstein, Misty Robotics arose, so Sphero could focus on robotic toys.
