Want to Stay Anonymous Online? Well, You Probably Can't .

Unfortunately there is no real anonymity and privacy when it comes to the internet.  Between Facebook and all these other companies collecting and selling your information to government interests making it so you can't stay anonymous the chances of being tracked becomes even easier.  Sure you can do things like encrypt your hard drive and use a VPN with Tor but in the end, if the NSA is after you, they will find you.

So unless you are running some illegal operation I wouldn't even worry about trying to remain anonymous because everything can all be cracked and tracked.  Like I mentioned above you can make it harder to be tracked by using Tails, VPN's and bouncing your packets off of a hundred proxies (which would slow your internet down anyway) but in the end it won't matter because the internet wasn't designed for anonymity, to begin with.  The protocol TCP/IPv4 was designed for trusted computers on trusted networks, being anonymous wasn't in the plan at the start of the internet.

Even the Darknet has become 'mainstream 'and with all the past and recent busts that have happened over the last few weeks.  That should show you that even these hacker/tech people that run these illegal sites can be found.  Besides who wants to use a million apps and services to hide anyway?  That will only lead to paranoia and your own demise in the long run.  Any company that offers you anonymity is a false promise and will give you a false sense of security.   If you really want to try to stay a little more private this is what i would suggest, run tails, whonix or Qubes from a USB stick or a CD and use the tor network.

Yes, we can do things to protect our privacy but being totally anonymous is impossible so thinking that using the Mcdonalds wifi is safe is very naive, you might as well go hide in the ball pit because they will find you in there as well!

Just stay honest and don't do illegal things and you will be just fine.  Going to bed knowing you can rest your head easy is priceless.

I am so excited about Yunk......you know what....anyway, thank you so much again. I am very blessed by you.

Thanks @stelabelle I appreciate that, I didn't know you were involved with yunk? when it first took off I used it on a few of my posts.
And don't mention it :) I feel happy and blessed by you too :) we are a team here- what good are we if we can't help each other. Hope all is well :0)*

Please @stellabelle and @road2wisdom i don't seem to understand what this "YUNK" stuff means and i don't want to use google :) can i get a head start?

Word vomit community based on vote4vote / follow4follow rather than quality posts, basically.

ducks

I watched enough Person Of Interest to know full privacy will never exists! LOL!

Me too as a matter of fact it happened to me and my family! I am starting to write a post on this matter but it will be a long 5 post series! thanks :)

Haha, 'you might as well go hide in the ball pit.'

You should assume everything you do online is being logged and tacked.

When getting a VPN make sure you pay in Bitcoin or other crypto. Dont give them your payment details. Also beware of VPN vendors they are dodgey lie and log you.

One of the best - https://nordvpn.com/

I couldn't, agree more! Keep your act clean and sleep easy! Peace in the heart is priceless! Excellent post! Upvoted!

Thank you :)

Just do you and you will do just fine.
And you are doing it.
To be honest I like to be tracked, sometimes I lose myself!

Thanks lol like being tracked, listen they post I did on the Greek earthquake can I was going to donate the sd to the greek-trail can I send it to you ?

I think you should keep your earnings. I have no idea how much you made, but the author is entitled to his earnings I wouldn't want for transparency reasons to accept them. I should check if there are any public ibans to donate to the families of those that where lost and if there are any I will get back to you...

Thanks for your support, the post alone was appreciated.
:)

Came with a bang ey. Very good post!

Thank you :0)

Transparency is going to be huge in the future but it's scary 😧😀

I wish that was true @road2wisdom. It would be a wonderful world if it was.

I know, we would have an entire different system in place :/

It's either living under a rock or giving up a bit of your privacy. If you have nothing to hide, you're fine. By having a mobile phone I probably share the most info about me, but I can live with that.

Nice post @road2wisdom

I agree, and thank you :0)

I used to take the "living under a rock" approach but I don't think that's viable anymore unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Too many cameras and too much data-mining everywhere.

Just stay honest and don't do illegal things and you will be just fine. !!! hmm well i wish it were true, but they begin in Europe to arrest people for voicing say anti government opinions, especially concerning the rise of Islamic threat here !! But its good to let people know the situation !! upvoted @road2wisdom )

I know in a perfect world it would be true but I believe the majority of us are good! In Canada too they have implemented thought crimes. I saw a case in NYC about 3 years ago where they started the thought crimes division on a former cop. Thank you @Gomeravibz

Only a fool would try to use McDonald's WiFi to stay anonymous, you gotta use Starbucks.

lmao, but Starbucks doesn't have a ball pit to hide in!!! lol

Crap! I didn't think of that.

The Feds are in shutdown mode on the Dark Web right now! Scroll down on this article and look at all the markets in the RED on the right hand side! OUCH!! https://darkwebnews.com/dark-web-market-list/

Dam :)

FULL UV/RS'd - lets make sure others know their not safe too! :)

HAHA its important we don't live with a false sense of security haha

Thank God people like you exist to give a true sense of security - a yin/yang balancer indeed! :D

Hello friend @road2wisdom , good post thanks for sharing , I congratulate you, keep it up

Thank you for your kind words :)

Sorry, I can't support not doing anything 'illegal.'

Most things actually are 'illegal' these days. I care not for what the government thinks of what I'm doing nor of how I should live my life.

Yeah, I was talking more about not doing anything illegal on the internet as in selling drugs to kids, etc those darknet markets that got shut down. I could care less what the gov. thinks I am doing too. I see it from your point of view but that's an entire different post that needs to be addressed as I said in my previous post if everyone started saying " I don't care I have nothing to hide" well , that's what they want us to say to strip of us of freedoms. Do you not agree with me on this?

I don't condone selling drugs to kids of course, but I also don't condone the government parading pitiful excuses like that around to usher in their standard invasive behavior. Sounds like we're roughly on the same page anyhow. :)

yes we are heeee :0)

Dear roads2wisdom, you seem more likely to reach that than others! I totally agree that anonimity cannot be achieved on the internet and if people think this possible, why are they on it anyway? I often tell the young that everything you consider publishing via social media is OUT THERE. Cannot be erased, inasmuchas there are folks and technicians who are paid to dig things up wherever they lay. I don't know if there are any rules, but it seems that Mr Berners Lee opened a Pandora's box when he started the world wide web. At present I am interested in getting ETHICS into data, but it's going to be a hard slog. I like your ideas and will follow you. Kind regards JV

People are on the Internet to communicate, play, do business, etc. To do whatever they like, basically. And it's their right to do that as anonymously as they want. But anonymity isn't all or nothing. One can compartmentalize ones online activity. Sure, use Facebook and other social media with family and friends. But don't say much that could feed stylometric analysis. Have other personas for sensitive online activity. And practice good OPSEC, to prevent them from becoming associated with ones real name.

Thanks and well said. I agree once its out on the net its out there! People and especially our children need to be careful on what they post. Thanks for the kind words.

very good friend

@azman

Thank you

When we post something online it becomes public, no matter how hard we try to hide our identity. This is the risk involved here.

I agree once its out there its there! It's very important we watch what our kids post and what we post. Thank you.

Yup we must avoid posting our kids pics. They can create a lot of trouble for us. BTW let me invite you to have a look at my Shepherd Photo Manipulation post. You will definitely love it.

I already just looked at it before I saw this message and up voted it :) great work. Keep them coming- Your talents are amazing.

Great post @road2wisdom and hello NSA since you are definitely flagging this post ;)

I use tor forcoin ico,s that don't let Americans in, otherwise I use safari. I know they track it all like they have to know every aspect of all people. It's sickening how bad our government is. Hope your feeling better. Good job on post.

Thanks, eh I am feeling a little better thanks for asking :) How are you? Yeah it sucks just how much in our business the Gov. is and we don't even know it most of the time.

Hi @road2wisdom, thank you for your valuable content, upvoted! I still recommend cryptotraders to secure their crypto transactions with a VPN network, like I explain in my article.

Thank you I will check them out

One thing People dont know is that a lot of Gorvernments also running TOR Servers (Nodes). The more People are just saying i have nothing to hide blablabla the further will Governments go. Once this door is opened its almost impossible to close this Door.

I agree I was taught to change my exit nodes lol thankf or sharing :)

No problem thanks for sharing your post :).

Perhaps you would like to try onG.Social. It is one of the first decentralized social media platforms and (as I have been told) it already counts with more users than Steemit. Soon it will incorporate its own coin to reward users for their activity, and guess what? They don't sell your private information yayy

You make some good points, but the overall message feels too defeatist to me. I've written a lot about these issues, on Wilders Security Forums, on Hacker News, and on the IVPN website. I believe that one can claw back as much privacy and anonymity as they want. And they can do it with setups that are workable and robust.

I agree that trusting companies that promise anonymity is dangerous. It's essential to distribute trust among multiple providers, such that compromise would require collusion. That's how Tor is designed.

Regarding "illegality", I broadly reject government authority. I'm a nonviolent and peaceful guy, unless attacked. But I refuse to worry about the legality of whatever interests me. As technology advances, the Internet will become the most fundamental reality. And so we must steadfastly assert its independence.

Many darknet services have indeed gone down in recent years. However, in all cases that I've looked at carefully, there have been glaring OPSEC failures. We can learn from those failures, and build stuff that won't get pwned so easily. I've written a long article, "Online Privacy Through OPSEC and Compartmentalization", which will appear on the IVPN website within a few weeks.

I learned a lot from this post, thanks! Bottom line for me is not to do illegal stuff. Now following, pls follow back if you'd like.

I 100% agree with you! ANYTHING that we put on the internet or our phones, we can expect for the world to have access to it. It's just facts. Love your pic Goddess mwahhh! <3 <3 <3 <3

Awesome post road. You nailed it. Most proxies are not very effective these days, and doxxing a user from their postings is probably even easier than using the technical options available.

The best defense is a good offense. And the best offense in a courtroom is never having to be in one.
