Like every year there were a-lot of phones unveiled at the mobile world congress this year, which was held in Barcelona, Spain. Apart from the phones there were also other tech related stuff that was unveiled at the show like laptops, chrome-books etc.
The main focus of this post is to show the best phones that were unveiled this year at the MWC.
1- Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus:
Samsung unveiled their new phones the S9 and S9 Plus today at the MWC. They are almost identical to the last year's S8 at least physically, but there are a lot of new features that has been added to the S9 to make it worth the money. It has the very first variable camera aperture in any smartphone (Click here to know more about it). It now has stereo speakers tuned by AKG, and has dolby atmos. It still has a headphone jack, improved performance, 25% brighter display and many more.
2- Sony Xperia XZ2/ XZ2 Compact:
Sony also unveiled their flagship for 2018 the Xperia XZ2 and its smaller compact version the XZ2 Compact. XZ2 has a 5.7" 18:9 IPS LCD however the bezels are quite small compared to previous sony phones but they are still big considering the competition. But those bezels do have front facing stereo speakers for better audio. It has a 19mp camera at the back, sony says that this is the first smartphone camera that can record 4K video in HDR, and can also record slow mo video at 960 fps in 1080p. Front camera is 5mp and can track facial expressions just like iPhone X. There is a fingerprint scanner at the back. It runs on Snapdragon 845 with 4GB of Ram, and comes with 64GB internal storage. It has a unique vibration motor that rumbles when playing games or watching videos.
The XZ2 compact is almost identical in specifications, but it has a smaller 5.0" 18:9 IPS display. It has a plastic back with no wireless charging which its bigger brother supports. It also lacks the vibration motor. There is no headphone jack on either of the phones.
3- Vivo Apex Concept Phone:
In my opinion, this is the best phone of the show, and my favourite too. This is the phone from the future and you can clearly see why. It has almost no bezel at the top, and sides and a very little at the bottom. My favourite features of this phone is the placement of the front facing camera, and the finger print scanner. Because there is no place at the front to put the front camera, they put it at the top of the phone where the sim tray of a Samsung Galaxy S8 is. When you want to use the camera it slides out from the top, and when you are no longer using it, it slides back.
The second feature is the finger print scanner, which is built into the display just like their previous phone (Vivo X20 Plus). But this time it is a lot bigger, it is almost the size of the bottom half of the display which makes it quite easy to use. You can put your hand anywhere at the bottom half of the display and it will unlock the phone.
And because there is no place on top of the display there is no ear piece for calls, instead the whole display of the phone vibrates for calls.
4- Nokia Lineup of Smartphones:
HMD Global is also releasing a number of Nokia devices this year at the MWC. They introduced 5 new phones this year. First is the classic, the matrix phone, The Nokia 8110, a feature phone. Next is the Nokia 1, which is a low end smartphone, then the Nokia 6 a mid range smartphone, then comes the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia's first 18:9 display smartphone, and than the Nokia 8 Sirocco.
I will be talking about all of Nokia phones in a separate post.
