The Top 5 Most Disruptive Technologies of The Next Decade

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” ― R. Buckminster Fuller

In my opinion, nothing can better describe how technology works than that quote. How many times have we experienced the world around us change and then change again? Too many times to remember.

Technology is a disrupting force that is evolving and moving forward faster than ever. If we look at it in the timescale of decades, then the next decade is going to bring us at least 2 or maybe even 3 decades worth of progress. It’s really interesting times to be alive right now.

Today, I want to talk about 5 technologies that are going to be really revolutionary in the next 10 years and will have a huge impact on our lives and society.

1. Wireless Charging

1.png

Ever since we started carrying smartphones, we have gotten into this habit of charging them frequently. Initially it was only the smartphones that we had to charge and that was fine.

Then came the tablets and now the smartwatches. Add to the mix your laptops and other portables and it quickly becomes a mess where you have to charge every single one of your device and there aren’t enough power outlets left in the house!

Well, not for long. Almost all the major tech companies are working on long distance wireless charging where charging your gadgets would be as simple as using the internet via wifi. Just roam around the house and your devices will stay charged! What a relief that would be, wouldn’t it? We wouldn’t even need to worry about the battery life anymore. Also, it will enable another tech that is my next point of discussion.

2. Internet of Things

2.png

Internet of Things or IoT is something that has been in the talks for quite a while now and it’s only starting this year that we are really seeing them take off.

Basically internet of things is just as it sounds. It’s the everyday objects being embedded with computing abilities that let them send and receive data. If we take an example of future homes, it means that your thermostat, toaster, washing machine, fridge and other ‘things’ will all be interconnected and will be able to be operated remotely. Google and Apple have started offering this just recently.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s applications are far-reaching, including in the field of manufacturing, energy management, transportation, agriculture, media and a lot more. This will be so cutting edge that it will need an entirely new wireless communication technology called 5G, which is also in the works right now.

3. 3D Printing

3.jpg

Today, printing stuff on papers is simply a no-brainer. In fact, we have even gone past that now and have started to move away from papers, making more use of screens on our various devices.

But it seems like printers will be making a comeback and this time they will be equipped with the ability of printing 3D objects. The 3D printers that are in use currently have limited functionality but in the coming decade they are about to revolutionise entire industries!

3D printing will have major implications in education, construction, manufacturing, fashion, food industry and even in medicine where we will one day be able to print organs and other body parts from the stem cells of a person.

4. AR and VR

4.png

For a long, long time now, the computing interface we have been using has involved screens and mouse pointers, or in case of touchscreen, our fingers. We are about to see a major shift in this interface in the coming decade.

AR (Augmented Reality) is a technology in which virtual objects are overlaid on the physical world and the user is able to perceive the virtual objects and interact with them through a headset or smartphone. In the future it will get much easier when smart glasses and smart contact lenses become a reality. Imagine being able to play video games where characters sprout in your living room! It has the power to revolutionise and make obsolete several industries.

VR (Virtual Reality) on the other hand is a bit different in that the user feels like he is in a different (virtual) world. There are no limits to the kind of virtual world you can create and be in. So, let’s say you want to hold a company meeting. You could attend that meeting from the comfort of your home but all of you would be together in a virtual world which could be on a beach or in a castle! I see this being used more in the gaming industry.

5. Self Driving Cars

5.jpg

Self driving cars are here and they are already changing lives for the better. Personally, I had thought that we wouldn’t see a functioning autonomous car for at least 5 more years.

Tesla and other companies proved me wrong. Tesla self driving cars have already driven hundreds of millions of miles getting smarter everyday. Imagine just summoning your car from your phone or wrist and it coming to you and dropping you off without you ever having to push a button let alone a pedal.

Also, self driving cars will be interconnected on the road thanks to the internet of things and it will help prevent accidents saving human life in the process. Also, the whole traffic grid will be much more efficient as they will make optimal use of the roads, meaning that there will be almost no traffic jams, saving energy and contributing towards environmental protection.

I think that Blockchain should be in the top 5 too though :)

Another disruptive technology is probably nano technology for medical purposes. No need to do surgery anymore for many diseases. We insert a nano robot in the body and let him do the work!

Blockchain could be a futur disruptive innovation, but no such as we know it at the moment.
Today Blockain is no sustainable because it produces an endless chain of blocks and more this chain increases more the necessary energy to calculate increases, and this is no sustainable.

I Agree. The scale problems and the ever growing ledgers are issues and hopefully the progress in technology can solve they issues/ keep pace with it.

Life extension, blockchain, gene therapy, 3D printing, anything related to clean energy and clean manufacturing.

All really great ones. Unfortunately couldn't fit all of them into one post hehe

Yeah, those 2 are the top ones there. There are many more actually and I will write part 2 and 3 of this post to talk about them :)

Thanks for the nice articles and indeed there are many technologies to come and probably part of them we do not see coming due to accidental discoveries

Now days, we see lot of thing amazing and that can help people arround the world, thanks for technology

You should put blockchain also. You already could 3d print organs. Check it https://3dprint.com/119885/wake-forest-3d-printed-tissue/
https://3dprint.com/178939/bioprinting-news-dog-robot/

Yeah, blockchain will be in the next one for sure. Yes, 3D printing of organs have started but they are still not a reality for a majority of the world right now.

these things will only happen if the people allow it.

Domi

I think technology has a way of changing the world whether people like it or are ready for it or not.

I do too. The only problem is WHO is in control of this powerfull tech!!!

Domi

Self driving cars is the one that excites me the most. I heard it's happening sooner than later.

Yeah, much sooner. We're going to see a major change on the roads.

Honorable mention: Bitcoin and the blockchain??

Yeah, these will make way into the part 2 of this post. :D

Excellent article about very likely disruptive technologies!! =) personally I see very much potential in the AR technology, which could enable to dive into a complete new world without leaving our 'reality', with the power to revolutionise the way we live! :D
Moreover I think Elon Musks company SpaceX could set the beginning of a new era for us humans in the space through reusable rockets....=)

Completely agree with you on both these!

Number #1 Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies :)

Yeah, it's a big one for sure. Will be writing about it in the next one.

I think you must include
Quantum computing in this list
Because in today's world there is very need of quantum computing
well your post is good . THANKS for posting

Computing computing is definitely among the top ones. Will include it in my next Top 5

I agree with most of this list, but I think some key tech was left out.

I could see blockchain technology being highly disruptive, especially with a platform like steemit already existing. Even if steemit doesn't go mainstream, it only takes one platform that will, or one of the already mainstream platforms (Instagram, FaceBook, Snapchat) to somehow incorporate blockchain into their social platform.

And thats just talking social, not even getting into industry.

And what about something like neural link? Direct brain-computer augmentation is a very real possibility within the next decade and could completely revolutionize the way we live and the ways we learn. If we're able to enhance the 150,000 year old hardware in our heads, theres no telling what could change on all levels of our society.

Also, genetic engineering. Things like CRISPR are already revolutionary, what happens as we build on that tech? What kind of impact will being able to pre-determine a Childs traits bring? Or ones ability to change their hair, eye, or even skin color?

Still, good write up. Looking forward to more : )

Yeah, there is so much that not all of it can be included in one Top 5 post. Will definitely write part 2 and 3 of this post to include all of those.

Yeah agreed. These technologies are really disruptive and ground breaking.

These will definitely give rise to more new awesome tech in future. :D

They will completely change life as we know it :)

Yeah..I can visualize it.

Wireless charge would be nice. I do like the thought of the car driving itself but I am a little concerned about it being susceptible to being infiltrated and taken over. I've been wanting a 3D printer since they came out. My daughter did have the oppurtinity to use a 3D printer on a small figure at our local library. No traffic jams would be awesome as well. Nice post you have a new follower and upvote :) I'm always interested in new technology that helps humanity.

yeah, the security issues will always be there in the tech world. That's just something we have to deal with. As they say, no system is truly safe. But yeah, tech is really taking us into a newer world where we will be able to things we never imagined before!

I think I am the Luddite who poo-poos some of this as hype even though the article and all of these technologies are interesting.

In my mind, "disruptive" means making significant perturbations in the business environment. Both IoT and AR/VR are, in my admittedly unexpert opinion, just "more and better" of a dynamic that exists already.

I do think wireless charging, self-driving cars, and 3D printing could really be game changers at some scale or another.

But business environment is not the only environment, right? There are many spheres of life and if a tech can disrupt even some of them, in my book, it can be called disruptive.

AR could be huge for businesses. They have huge applications in the industry. Companies are literally dying to make use of it.

VR, I think, will be more aimed towards the gaming industry.

Im so excited about the 3D printing technology track. I think coupled with bio science, I think Star trek style food replicators are possible. Imagine famine and food poverty completely eradicated. Thats a world i'd like to live in.

Exactly! 3D printing will be so pervasive in the future that will be surprised how we ever managed without it. Would be really helpful for the less unfortunates of the world and that is just awesome! Any tech that frees people from suffering is a tech worth pursuing.

You're definitely right there, it would be possible to eliminate famine if we could print our food on demand.

That would be one of the biggest achievements of humanity :)

Can we have the first one now? I just left the city for the weekend and forgot the charger :))
The quote is so applicable to our evolution also, not about fighting who we are but building a better version every day:)

haha I wish we could have that one sooner rather than later, but yeah, it will come in time and we will reminisce the days we had to get up and physically put our phones on charge!! lol

devices which instantly translate things are groundbreaking as well (ili, babelfish ...)

it implies that we don't really NEED to learn new languages for practical purposes any more

oh yes, definitely!! They are straight out from sci-fi.

Wow, that AR and VR technology is amazing. I can only think of the many applications with it. Amazing. Technology is truly changing our lives. Getting excited with upcoming technology to come out for us to apply in our everyday life. Awesome. Nice post.

AR and VR will bring in the next phase of computing interface. We will slowly be moving away from screens.

So true. Enjoyed your post. Follow me for content. Thnx

I agree, these are all very disruptive.

I think it remains to be seen whether they will be disruptive in mostly positive or negative ways.

There is some research suggesting that bathing ourselves constantly in the radiation of WiFi may not be the most healthy thing. And the impact on privacy and individuality that these technologies will have should be taken into consideration.

Humans have a proclivity to jump headlong into things before totally understanding the ramifications of their actions.

Especially where there's money to be made.

As always, technology is a double edged sword and it is upto us how we use it.

@sauravrungta,
Great post and yeah those technologies will be here in next decade. Thank you very much for sharing those information to the society. Your article added a real value to the society. I have decided to follow you!

Cheers friend~

Thank you for reading. Glad you liked it :)

Don't know about the wireless charging, but all the others are definitely true🚀

The wireless charging one is also true :)

Good post. I really think driverless cars will take some time to be the common thing. Take a look at traffic James in Rio or crowded places like that. I dont see it. The Technology is there for sure, but i see transporting goods to take the lead. Transport ppl at airports, even more than today, post deliverys.. that kind of things. Factory florors..It could be the next .com crash first..

Yeah, it will definitely take some time. That's why I think it will still take 10 years for it to be more visible on the roads.

Nice innovative ideas and blog, also following you.
My self also a Indian so plz help me @blueheaven🙋🐛

Thank you for reading :)

"The science of today is the technology of tomorrow"- simple as that.

yep that's true!!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

You re totally right these technologies are really disruptive !! I liked the 3D printing part !!

Thank you for reading :)

I always wondered what's best:

A 3D printer that prints you a self-driving car?

Or a self-driving 3D printer that prints you stuff on the go?

Why not both ;)

Completely agree with you. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for reading :)

All seems so close and we can see mass adoption frequently using these technology in the next 5 ~ 15 years , great posts btw! Tried VR too !

Thanks for the great comment!!

LOL

IOT doesn't need 5G. Those are two different topics and completely different technology. IOT has already been launched and 5G is still a few years away

Self-driving vehicles will have a lot of ramifications.

Blockchain should be on the list

STEEM On!!

Dave

Yes, it doesn't need it as we are already seeing it's adaptation. But what we are seeing right now is just a small percentage of the true potential of this technology. When IoT will be as mainstream as smartphones today, 5G will definitely be needed for the flawless performance of this tech. I recently watched a TED talk where this topic was covered.

I love the style of this post, very informative and well put! Thank you for postinf such a great article. I love the idea of self driving cars and the IoT, there is a new tech that will replace the blockchain as well it is called IoTA based on tangle. It is like the smart token for the internet of things!

Hmm, I haven't heard about it before. Will check it out.

Great post mate! But Blockchain is my favourite disruptive technology by far XD

haha yeah, it is for sure. Will write about it in my next part of this post.

I really agree with the 3D printing this post s great thanks a lot for sharing and keep on posting ;)

Thank you for reading :)

Wireless charging Will be great there will be need of moving charge from one place to another.but how will that be possible?let's watch and see.

They already have the technology ready. Only it's mass production is left.

Yup, thats the way how it goes.

A Lot of those sounds quite scary wireless charging especially. All that radiation flying around nice!

Wireless charding will be no more harmful than wifi is today.

Yer thats my worry :)

Yes I agree with all of your list! But I must say, I did not ever consider the wireless charging technology and how it may change the world! Thank you for this post!

Thanks for reading :)

Lel you talk about the top 5 most disruptives technology and you start with wireless charging ? I mean..C'mon

Plus no blockchain, you merely mention machine learning with self driving cars, Your post is pretty and well written and talks about 5 inventions but not really the "top 5" :)

By the way if you like technology/gaming/personal development I'm writing about it, you might like it :)

The top 5 doesn't mean "literally top 5 in the world in a descending order". So, wireless charging is not the top most tech currently. (What I'm trying to say is that order doesn't matter in my top 5's)

There are so many still left to write about which I will write in a part 2 and part 3 and maybe even part 4 of this post.

Bot IoT and self-driving cars worry me from a security perspective. OEMs don't seem to care about IoT security, and car may care somewhat about security, but they seem to care way more about adding fancy non-secure features, like remote unlocking of doors via non-secure protocols, and so on. It's a real danger because such vulnerabilities could literally kill you.

Yes, the security aspect worries me too. But no system is truly safe. I guess that's the inherent risk of these type of innovations. Also, I think that as these tech go mainstream, the security will be ramped up for sure. Companies will have to do that or risk failure as the free market chooses the best option.

Yay, I am a physicist in Augmented Reality :)
There I also have some stories to tell.
And in fact it goes hand in hand with 3D printing.

Nevermind, lately I've been fascinated with blockchain and data on it as well ;)

wow, nice to know that! Just checked out your blog. You have a really interesting blog and the content you put out is really awesome. Keep at it man! :D

qed, with writing only "@sauravrungta", you summoned the info service of @qed:
99.974% of steemers have lower reputation than sauravrungta.
92.833% of steemers signed up later than sauravrungta (2016.07.14 at 08:20:03).
Hope that helps. Take care!

This is a really interesting bot! Thanks for the info :)

See my comment in this blog post.

Nice! :D

The big game changer will be more advanced battery technology able to store more energy quickly at low cost.

yeah, that would be a really big one and I have been reading about a lot of these so called emerging tech. But we have only been hearing about them and not seeing them in use at all! Every now and then we hear about something amazing and later is just vanishes, sort of.

All bollywood movies will miss their horror plot of no driver cars after these self driving cars.

hahah, yeah, they will need to find some other clichés! :D

The hype is real!! haha

Do we trust cars enough to let them drive us?

Cars are trustworthy. It's the humans that are not.

Oh man. I remember when the 3D printer came out... I was so stoked! There are so many customizations you can do with a 3D printer... like make custom arms and legs for people! How cool is that?

yeah, that's so cool. They are printing entire houses with 3D printing now and the applications will only increase with time!

Wow really? What would the material be made out of? A plastic house? Or can you print using metal?

I think they are using all sorts of materials. All custom made as per the requirements of the design :)

Dang. I always thought you could only build in plastic... that was always the material I saw when I did get a glimpse of a 3D printer. Pretty fascinating. I'm guessing the printer has to be pretty large if you are trying to build a house out of it.

They have moved on from plastic already ;) Yeah, the ones building the houses are pretty large.

LOL. I'm behind the times... I wondering if they could make 3D cakes and pastries. That would be pretty cool if you could just put in the ingredients into the printer and poof a castle cake gets made. haha just getting crazy with the ideas.

haha, actually 3D printing of food has started already :D :D

IoT is definitely gonna be huge! It would be so cool to control everything while you are away.

Wireless charging will be a boon to mankind! :P I keep running out of charge like every three hours and living in a house with only a few number of sockets is kind of a pain(not to forget roommates). I gotta wait my turn to charge my device.

Owning a self driving car is a dream!!(I can't drive, it's sad)

Great post Saurav :)

Yeah, life will be much easier with these tech in it. Thanks for reading Tara :)

Good article @sauravrungta I am excited to see the possibilities of AR in combination with vehicles.

oh yes, AR could really help in that regards. I guess, when we will have truly autonomous cars, we would just sit around looking at AR enabled car windows that provide information about the surrounding as the car drives :D

Yes this would be really cool. Think about delivery drivers and other mobile workforce field agents, so much potential when the driver becomes more of an operator with access to all the information they need without the distraction of having to drive the vehicle.

Yes sir! Every one of these is hot right now. I didn't even think about the potential of the VR-AR Technology that with out a doubt going to change the way we operate.
One of the other things that I believe will add to that is the "Talk to Text" technology. As this becomes more effective, (still archaic in my opinion)you will be able to put your headset on and work in a different world.

You will be able to put a VR head set on and go into a meeting with people around the world. Everyone with their presentation ready to share and discuss.

All of this will be accelerated by the advancements in Nano technologies.
Wild world we live in right now. I still remember when my uncle gave me a portable, battery power, black and white TV and I thought that was cutting edge technology.
Screen Shot 2017-07-13 at 10.57.54 AM.png

Yeah, I think the ultimate goal of technology is to just get out of the way. That will be possible in the future and it will be a different world. We'll be able to just say stuff and they will happen and even think about stuff and they will happen. Just like magic!! :D
