"In less than a week, the ratchet was designed, approved by safety and other NASA reviewers, and the file was sent to space where the printer made the wrench in four hours.”
Niki Werkheiser
Space Station 3-D printer program manager at NASA

3d printing in space like this will be vital in future missions (like a trip to mars).

The printer finished the part in 4 hours and of course in the future that's likely to expedite, cool... the main digest of this article is most likely that we're about to find out what strength we're currently 3d printing things in space. They printed a tool and that tool is being brought down for us to examine on earth. This will be a test of its quality compared to what we can do planet side. We'll learn what level we're currently printing at, these will be measurements we'll use in calibration.
