My take on LDAP - #0 Introduction and Overview

in technology •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello Steemians,

I've been spending some time working with various LDAP installations over the last few months.
As I found it quite confusing and difficult to get right at first, I thought I'd write an experience report / guide about setting up LDAP in a Debian / Ubuntu environment.

There are quite a few contradictory guides on the internet, especially for some advanced features like StartTLS or connecting pam to LDAP.

I hope I can save someone from as long of a struggle as I had to go through.

As I plan on continuously adding content over the next few weeks, I will be posting each major part separately.
All I'm writing will be for Ubuntu 16.04 and/or Debian 1.92 but many things can be transferred to most other distributions.

Overview

  • The LDAP Server
  • Pam Client with LDAP (logging in the a Linux machine with LDAP credentials)
    • Setup SSSD (A package that can connect pam to LDAP) (ToBeAdded)

This list may expand in the future. If you would like to see a specific topic, just drop a comment below.
But also if you have experience in any LDAP related topic, that is not on this list yet, feel free to post an explanation about it and
share the link down in the comments, so I can add it to the list.

Thanks for your feedback
