My take on LDAP - #1 Prerequisites

in technology •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello Steemians,

this is part #1 of my series about LDAP on Ubuntu / Debian.
Today we'll decide on a few crucial constants, that will be used throughout this series.

First we need to make sure, there is a consistent way of reaching the machine where the LDAP Server will be installed on.
Ideally this is a FQDN, or alternatively a public IP address.
But as these can be harder to come by and if the server only needs to be accessed from the local network
it is possible to use a local hostname or IP-Address. For example 192.168.100.100 or myLDAPServer.
For this series I'll be using the local IP 10.10.10.10.

Second we need to decide on the base domain of our LDAP server. Ideally it is the same FQDN the server is reachable by.
Alternatively we can use any domain name that makes sense. (Maybe the domain of the organization / instance that this LDAP server is for.)
For this series I'll be using the domain sub.example.net.

For the LDAP base we need to write it like this:
dc=sub,dc=example,dc=net

Stay tuned for the next part, where we'll install the LDAP server
