During the last few years, the National Security Agency, the United States spy agency and largest in the world, has transformed from a low-profile organization to one of the most talked-about agencies in the world, due to the numerous leaks that they have suffered. This leak will likely even impact average people with home routers! Blockchains, like Steem and Bitcoin, are a huge technological advancement in applied mathematics that can provide additional hardening for cybersecurity assets.
Not long ago, a group known by the name of ‘ShadowBrokers’ has announced a bitcoin-based auction for a couple of materials they referred to as cyber weapons, created by the NSA. As the provenance of the code has been debated by security experts throughout the world, comparison with Edward Snowden’s documents and tough analysis has proven the origins of the arsenal.
To put things into better perspective, the files include several programs, one of which is an efficient tool that can be used to both intercept and redirect computer traffic to the NSA servers in order to infect computers with a surveillance malware.
In a recent interview, Matthew Green, a cryptographer for the Johns Hopkins University stated:
The danger of these exploits is that they can be used to target anyone who is using a vulnerable router. This is the equivalent of leaving lock picking tools lying around a high school cafeteria. It’s worse, in fact, because many of these exploits are not available through any other means, so they’re just now coming to the attention of the firewall and router manufacturers that need to fix them, as well as the customers that are vulnerable. So the risk is twofold: first, that the person or persons who stole this information might have used them against us. If this is indeed Russia, then one assumes that they probably have their own exploits, but there’s no need to give them any more. And now that the exploits have been released, we run the risk that ordinary criminals will use them against corporate targets.
To release the files to the highest bidder, the hacking group, Shadow Brokers, has started an auction, through which they hope to raise a total of one million bitcoin, equal to roughly $581 million. At the time of writing, the group has received several donations and bids, which account to roughly 2 bitcoin, far from their final goal.
However, it seems like the movement of digital currency has been detected in a wallet seized, and held by the U.S. Government. This has raised suspicion that state agencies are considering the idea of bidding on the auction in order to prevent the exploits and files being offered to end up in someone else’s hands.
In fact, reports indicate that while the auction has managed to generate marginal interest from the public and a bit of money, some of the funds are coming directly from the Silk Road Bitcoin wallet, seized from Ross Ulbricht in 2013. In response to these claims, some members of the community believe that the US Government is trying to send signals and get access to the auction, or even buy the files to limit the damage.
So far, a couple of cyber security companies such as Fortinet and Cisco have announced that they’ve been affected by a similar malware and that they’re hard at work to find a way of mitigating the issue. After the attack, the NSA has likely changed its security protocols, hence deeming the files obsolete. However, analysis of what Shadow Brokers has managed to obtain can provide crucial information on how the agency operates and their actual plans.
Based on everything that has been outlined so far, do you think that the US Government is attempting to participate in the auction? Do you think blockchains can help harden cybersecurity assets? What can you do to protect your information? How could Steem be used to secure information?
Please, let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
The US government will eventually classify bitcoin as a tool for terrorists, this is will be bad for bitcoin

I have seen this coming our way a long while ago as well... Surprised to see that it has yet been an official decree, but in doing so, they'd give it exposure underlining its intrinsic powers and shoot themselves in the "feet". It becomes thus, a matter of timing which makes me wonder what it will take for them to do so!?! Namaste :)

the culture of bitcoin is anti-government, so the more bitcoin gets used to terrorize society is the closer bitcoin get's to being politically attacked by the government, it's only a mater of time. There are many other cryptos who do not have a political stance and can do what bitcoin does.

Plus I am surprised BTC has lasted as long as it has since it is in direct competition with the Central Banks that mine through printing money from thin air. But BTC is dwarfed by the fact that the internet will no longer be under American control as of October 1st: https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/18/us-government-cedes-control-of-the-internet-in-october/

Wouldn't large intrusive governments actually prefer Bitcoins in some ways to things like Dollars? With Bitcoin, they could monitor every single transaction and every account. They could use their powers and resources to determine owners of many accounts, and easily create graphs of who each person trades with and how they spend their money.
Bitcoin is a great thing, but the "crypto" in its cryptocurrency is about trust, and not about privacy. Bitcoin has a very open ledger, and while sometimes governments will cause trouble, won't they also see the huge advantages that Bitcoin offers them with its providing a very easy way to monitor all of the usage?

Definitely as subject matter that is building up as the world of crypto-currencies is rising drastically. The sort of intrusion you are making reference to not unheard of and most possibly an every day occurence. the advent of the blockchain technology is pushing forward the standards of privacy and surely hardens to monumental levels our privacy potentiel, but one still has to deal with the essentiels first... Namaste :)

Since we all know the US Government doesn't negotiate with terrorists... this can't be true! (Sarcasm font on)

I suspect this is the US government and I very much doubt they are genuinely looking to buy these tools.
It is most likely an operation to trace and capture those who are selling them.
It is pretty obvious government/security agency behaviour.
The tools as you suggest will likely be obsolete by now.
Also I wonder what the legality is of using the Silk Road BTC? Not that it matters to government agencies but they can't keep this kind of thing secret and deniable. BTC makes that pretty much impossible.

I have also posted about this issue last week shadow brokers known hackers claims to have obtained cyber surveillance weapons which are used by The US secret services and auction the tools for 01 million BTC but only 2 BTC or 05 transaction to the hackers BTC wallet observed.
please read my post too for more detail.

If these guys were smart they'd be asking for Monero not Bitcoin.
