Samsung is making 32GB SO-DIMMs

Samsung has announced that it will be releasing a /new generation of RAM modules aimed at laptops with the capacity of no less than 32GB.
Yes, 32GB of RAM in a single module for a laptop. The company is aiming gaming laptops with this module, because it will cost an arm, a leg and several vital organs. But since gaming laptops are already as expensive as diamond encrusted anti-matter, bought only by people that have more money than sense, it won't really have as much of an impact in terms of price as it would have were this a standard DIMM.

Well, even if it were a standard DIMM, it would still be hard to notice, since prices for current DDR4 RAM is still absurdly high, and won't really dip until the end of the year (a bit) and next year.

But there is a silver lining here. Samsung is making new memory. More memory. And it's the nifty kind of memory. The kind that's being produced at a sub 20nm process, meaning the capacity is higher, hence the 32GB, but performance is also better. This type of RAM is around 11% faster than the 20nm variant, which isn't a lot, but it should help those seeking better performance, especially in the case of Ryzen based systems. For laptops there's also the 39% power efficiency boost, leading to better battery life. Heck, it would probably also give some memory overclock headroom too, though I'm not sure if you'd really want to do that, since the timings will probably be worse. I've got no clue what the timings on this DDR4-2666 are, but I hope they're decent.

Expect Samsung's RAM to be in an overpriced gaming laptop somewhere near you in the coming months. Also expect RAM prices to not drop for a few more months as well.

Unless you are going to be heavy workstation abilities on the laptop whilst travelling, I don't really see the need of getting a 32gb ram in a computer. Plus gaming laptops are bought because of their CPU and GPU and less for their GPU, because 8gb Is enough and 16gb is more than enough.

I suspect they will find their way into overpriced Macbook Pros too. Give me a less overpriced Alienware any day :).
