With 5 years plus experience working as a technology recruiter in Hong Kong, I have seen different job-seeking & hiring trends in the market.
One thing to note is that, no matter the economy is booming or not, misunderstanding about how the job market functions is one of the TOP reasons to explain why both the candidates & employers are having a hard time finding the right fit.
In this article, I would like to share my observation over the past few years of the Tech hiring market from the candidates’ perspective in Hong Kong:
• Before 2013, most of the candidates in the Technology industry prefer to work in the banking & financial industry.
• After the downsizing & relocation, candidates think that banking industry might not be as stable. Also, due to budget constraint, the salary in the banking industry is not as competitive as before.
• With the uptrend of start-up & the influx of generation Y into the work force, a lot of candidates are more interested in working for “innovative” start-ups that create web/mobile products, hoping to be part of the team that creates something “wow” like facebook, Instagram, whatsapp.
Feel free to share or comment on whether you think this is what you have been seeing in the market in Hong Kong?
Or, if you are from another country, do you see the same trend happening?
Stay tune for my next article about my observation from the employers’ perspective & the gap between job seekers & employers!
