Johan Sverdrup is the third largest field on the Norwegian continental shelf. Its reserves are estimated at 2.2–3.2 billion barrels. Although the field was discovered in 2010, the development was started only in 2019.
It is reported that oil production starts from the level of 226 thousand barrels per day, but by the summer of 2020, the national Norwegian company Equinor, which is engaged in the development plans to reach the production of 440 thousand barrels. In 2022, it is planned to put the field development into commercial operation, as a result, production at Johan Sverdrup should grow to 660 thousand barrels per day.
According to experts, it will be possible to produce oil on this field within the next 40–50 years.
When the top of the production will be reached at Johan Sverdrup, it is considered that this field will account for 25% of all oil production in Norway.
