Tel Aviv Carmel Market

Another must to do in Tel Aviv is to visit the Carmel Market. Very busy, lots of people, lots of goods, lots of food.

Sadly this has also been the sight of a terrorist attack. On Monday 1 Nov 2004, shortly after 11 am a young Palestinian boy (16 years old) wearing an explosive belt hidden underneath his clothes detonated the explosive device killing himself and three civilians and wounding over 30 other people.

We returned to Carmel Street at night to see the night life. The market was closed but Tel Aviv was busy busy busy. It amazed us how safe it was and how many women and youngsters move around at night. Buses, taxis, bicycles, scooters.

We could not enjoy this freedom in our home city of Johannesburg.

As we sat here I thought about the terrorist attack and I felt so sad for the victims and so sad for the 16 year old terrorist for wasting his life in such a terrible way. I cannot imagine the hatred and total lack of feeling of good will that must be in the hearts of those who plan and carry out these acts of terrorism My prayers go out for peace in this land.
