Her father was an Albanian builder. She had two elder brother and sister. At the age of 18, she joined the order of the sisters of Our Lady of Loreto in Ireland. In 1928 she began her journey to India. There she began teaching at a Calcutta girls school in 1931. She felt shocked at the sight of the sick and dying destitute on the streets of Calcutta. She founded Nirmal Hriday in 1952 for their proper care and treatment. She felt grieved for the children who were deprived of the motherly love and affection. Besides, the people attacked by incurable diseases like lepers moved her. So in 1953 she started an orphanage to take care of them. In 1957 she and her Missionaries of Charity began working with lepers. She was awarded many prizes in her lifetime. And in 1979 she won Nobel prize for promoting world peace.
