The trial will begin within the next three to six months.
The head of Tesla Ilon Mask stated that one of the company's goals is to test the autopilot of one of the electric cars with a long-distance trip. The businessman promised that within the next three to six months the car will automatically start traveling from one coast of the USA to another.
The idea is to prove the expediency of developing an autopilot for the future in this field of technology. Mask announced the event in 2017, but it was postponed due to the fact that the developers did not have time to prepare the software for a long distance trip.
Mask noted that at present he is "satisfied with the progress made in the field of programming neural networks," referring to the artificial intelligence system necessary for the safe management of vehicles without a driver.
A little is known about the details of the upcoming testing. According to Mask, during the test run the electric car will be transferred to completely unmanned mode. It is unclear whether there will be a driver present in the car and what will be the Tesla route.
