Am getting confused on this one. If everyone is getting 22, maybe they did it like this:
6+4-1 =9
9+6-1 =14
14+9-1 =22
Or
4*2-2=6
6 *2-3=9
9 *2-4=14
14 *2-5=23
23 *2-6=40

I don't think there even can be enough information for a single right answer, except if one is asked to produce a function to compute the sequence and an upper limit is given to the number of characters allowed to express the function using a specified notation.
