Thailand has 156 National Parks - according to Google. I have lived in Thailand for many many years and generally I avoid the national parks here as they have the hilarious 2 tier pricing scam which just pisses me off. They charge non-Thais ten times more to enter. Over the years I have had a few debates with Non-Thais about this that believe it's fair - interestingly you will never meet a Thai national that agrees with it, they are all ashamed of it.
Of course it's total nonsense and the fact that every Thai person I know is embarrassed about it further re-enforces how dumb it is. What also make its even more shameful is the fact that the Thai National Parks try to hide their deceit by writing the numbers in their archaic numeric script - which by the way is not used for anything anywhere ever anywhere in Thailand on any sign that requires numbers - only here at the national park fees signage, where they blatantly cheat Non Thais. OMG its hilarious!
But anyway, this story is not about the shameful, childlike, money-grabbing nature of the Thai authorities, but rather an exception to the rule. A national park just south Of Hua Hin in the province of Prachuap Kiri Khan - about 200km south of Bangkok. They are unable to adopt their thieving admission fees here as there is a main road that runs through the park. I cycled through it this morning for two hours in the beautiful morning light. The sun was casting awesome long shadows of my bicycle as I was riding and I just couldn't stop taking photos of it.
Within the Sam Roi Yot National park is an amazing wetlands area that is teeming with birdlife. I cycled through that area right at sunrise and there was a veritable cacophony of bird noise. Im not some kind of bird watching nerd but I have to admit it was pretty awesome. I wasn't really able to capture it on my phone cam but here is a pic anyway....
So here's the thing - this is one of the few national parks in Thailand that you can enter for free (Thais and Non-Thais) The scenery is amazing and it totally bike friendly and very easily reached from Bangkok. Check it out! I loved it and i'm sure anyone who visits will agree!
Im Krabi Stu. Peace.
