The Secretariat is a body composed of international staff working at United Nations Headquarters in New York and throughout the world and carrying out the various daily work of the Organization. The service of the other principal organs of the United Nations and the management of its programs and policies are handled by the Secretariat. The Secretary-General, appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a renewable five-year term, shall be headed by the Secretariat.

The functions of the Secretariat varied in a variety of problems dealt with by the United Nations. The scope of these functions extends from the Department of Peacekeeping Operations to mediation to the settlement of international disputes and from the survey of economic and social trends and problems to the preparation of studies on human rights and sustainable development. The organization of international conferences on issues of concern to the world at large; the monitoring of the implementation of resolutions adopted by United Nations bodies; the interpretation of speeches and the translation of documents into the official languages ​​of the Organization.
