Fresh out of the oven, I look back at the institutionalised and 'safe haven' I was placed in when in school. Now, only a mere three months later and I already feel tainted, exposed, and weary, even with the solid income I get as a Sales Consultant. (Not as solid as I would've hoped but then again, humans, specifically 90s babies, are never really satisfied for too long...)
Being out of the warmth that High School provided, I already feel a bit nostalgic about the times I had with friends, teachers, sporting mates and the like: even the maintenance staff rubbed their warmth onto my journey. Every time I enter the hustling and bustling CBD of one of the world's toughest cities, Johannesburg, South Africa, (with my whitehead of a 1997 Ford Fiesta)I am reminded to put on the ultimate poker face. If one were to teleport from the suburbia to the Heart of Jo'burg, it would burn the eyes in the same way we first get exposed to the sun when coming out the house. Even the slow journey to work doesn't do much to help the burn.
These days the burn is more because of the work I do: trading Foreign Exchange. Yes, I agree, it is ambitious, even for early bird millennials looking for a another source of income or a short to medium term investment. I figured, seeing as I know the potential Managing Director, why not throw my hat in the ring. So I did. Now I'm a Sales Consultant and a part time Forex Trader. Waking up at one in the morning is not the most appealing of job descriptions.
Two months ago, I would've dazzled you with my plans to travel. The more immersed I get, the more I put off the travelling. BUT, June is coming, finally going to pull through on the plans for travelling: Netherlands. End of the year, it's the home of one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world: Japan, with a good friend. But we'll have to see how my eyes adjust to the highly demanding career endeavour and the overly prescribed coffee to aid my being awake, leading to the optical malfunction occasionally.
That's how the 'Gap year' is treating me thus far.
