In Indonesia alone, the entomology of its existence as a science, initially not too noticed. But there are certain points of events concerning entomology activities in the archipelago recorded by history. In the book "Six Decades of Science and Scientists in Indonesia", the period of entomology development in Indonesia is divided into three periods.

The first, the period before the 20th century. At this period the development of entomology gained a great influence from outsiders, especially those who came from Europe. One of the first to be an entomologist in Indonesia is George Everhard Rumphius, a German scientist who sent a letter containing requests to conduct research on various living things, including insects in Ambon in 1962

Then there is also Francis Walker and J. van der Wulp who is a student of Carl Linnaeus, a botanist and zoology.Francis and van der Wulp who later inspired to do entomology research in Indonesia in the 1800s after reading their teacher's book entitled Systema Naturae.

Entering the mid-19th century, there is Alfred Rusell Wallace. It may be one that advances entomology learning in Indonesia. Through his research he confirms the role and position of taxon in his habitat, and the meaning of the existence of taxon on the arrangement of positions in a region.

During this period, scientists are also required to take advantage of entomology to overcome two problems. The first is a health problem. Tropical disease at that time was epidemic, especially malaria and firiasis.

The second is the problem of development of export commodities and food agriculture, both sectors are quite vulnerable by pest attacks, while on the other side of these two sectors is arguably the nadir point of a colonial government, because without both colonial government can not fill the state treasury. then used to overcome this, even entomology in this sector which then most developed until this period.

The second period, located in the 20th century. This period became the beginning of the development and division of entomology activities in Indonesia. Beginning with the creation of a zoological laboratory in Bogor in 1901, the laboratory named Landbouw-Zoologische This laboratory was initiated by Melchior Treub, and the confidence to manage it was given to Koningsberger.

In the book "Six Decades of Science and Scientists in Indonesia" it is explained that in this period entomological activity split into two lines, because there are two kinds of entomology needs at that time, namely for the benefit of prestige traditions and commercial economic needs. image

The last period entered during the post-World War II period. The war waged a deadly entomology activity in Indonesia, only in 1949, the study began to run again. In that year stands a set called EVEI (Entomologische Vereeniging in Indonesie). But due to the chaotic situation of the country, this association only runs until 1964.New in 1970, entomology activities continued with established

Entomology Association of Indonesia (PEI). As a result of the Five Year Development Plan (REPELITA) in 1969, the Indonesian government generated activities in Indonesia, including entomology activities. Entomology activities at this time focused on the agricultural sector, especially overcoming pests. Then with the establishment of PEI, various entomology activities were held. Like the making of various papers, the Congress of Entomology I and Entomology Symposium was held in 1974.

Unfortunately these activities are less well preserved, as in 1992, out of about 300 papers only two that fulfill the competence to appear in the Fourth Congress of the Entomology Society

Probably most of you insects are only disruptive and disgusting little living things. image But Who would have thought that insects have a major impact on human survival?

For example, during the Ancient Egyptian period, the endas wasps (Vespa orientalis) were used as symbols of government during the period of Ramesses II's leadership. Then also the Ancient Greeks in the 400s before, they used the wasp image to mark the coins in circulation at that time. Lainya is the case with the ancient Indians who use butterflies as their artistic inspiration.

Even the existence of insects in religion was unforgettable, for example in the Qur'an (Surat An-Nahl) which describes the honey bees. Whereas in the Gospels, insects are discussed in Matthew 3: 4 on locusts and
forest honey. This small living creature also proved to be unforgettable in human life. So then created entomology, science learned it.

But what is the benefit of studying this small living thing?

Apparently with entomology, humans can overcome various diseases that come from insects, such as malaria, chikungunya, dengue fever and so on. Entomology is also used by humans for the provision of food and industrial fields, such as silk production, honey, lac, and many other benefits.

In overcoming the problems created by the insects themselves, for example in pests, is also then solved with entomologi ini.Berkat memeisi twists and turns of the life path of insects, humans then find a way to overcome pests. image
