In reality I don't follow a local team as the team I root for is from the capital Tegucigalpa. It is of course a Football team as that is the big sport in this country.
I have been a follower of this team for over 50 years, quite a long time, during this time it has been champion for 16 times, the second team with most championships. It also would have been champion in 1972 but the league was cancelled for some reason. It was also in first place this year when the league was cancelled because of the pandemic.
The team plays in the National Stadium in the capital, it has its own facilities in the Valle de Amarateca about 25 kms. from the capital. It is a very up to date facility for the training of a Football team.
The team has never had such a good trajectory out of the country, having just been Central American champion once and CONCACAF second place once. It even participated in the Copa Sudamericana once, with not a good showing.
It has the second largest fan base in the country, and has a Barra Brava which is quite violent. I stopped going to watch Football a long time ago I guess I saw my team for the last time about ten years ago.
As an aside the last time I went to the local stadium in La Ceiba, which is were I live, was in 2013 the local team Victoria played the Mexican Xolos de Tijuana, there was an incredible thunderstorm, by 10:30 pm I figured there would be no game so I left, they started it after 11:00, that convinced me that going to a stadium was lost time.
Back to Motagua, it has provided many players to the national Football team, including a few who went on to relative fame in Mexican, US and even some European leagues. I guess the best known player has been Amado Guevara, he retired a few years back. Also Emilio Izaguirre who played several years with Glasgow Celtic and is now back at Motagua.
The team does have a website www.motagua.com, but it is undergoing maintenance right now, so I was not able to put a few pictures on this post. The team does sell a lot of T-shirts and other team merchandise online.
