But for a brief moment, we think we know who we are, the person we think the other children see.

A small window in time, when we laugh and play and believe that the world is warm, and fair, and inviting.

Then the first pain of betrayal, the untruth, the sickening death of innocence.

To grow is to learn, to leave behind, to dislocate from your previous truths.

Loyalties accumulated on recess playgrounds and in backyard gangs

Eventually lead to realities that must be faced,

And memories lost to time, separated, dismembered, removed, as quickly as an,

Xacto knife glides through its unknowing substrate, to bare its true underneath

Eventually, everything changes
