Theater Night Out 13 : Buenos Tangos at Nea Smyrni Park Theater

This is the beginning of the new season and what better way to start with a tango performance.

As you may remember I took my first tango lesson a few days ago. I was curious if I would have a different perspective on the dance after having learned a couple of things about it.

The performance took place in a Theater inside Nea Smirni Park not very far from where I live. As you can see it is an open Theater and I have to admit that I was a little bit cold.

Ten dancers and seven musicians from Tanguros del Sur Compania traveled us to Argentina and gave us a history lesson in tango, from its creation to modern day master.

Music was from Carlos Gardel, Alfredo Le Pera, Juan D 'Arienzo, Anibal Troilo, José María Contursi and of course Astor Piazzolla. It was masterfully performed by the musicians on stage.

The choreography was from Natalia Hills and described the birth of tango and the influences from African rhythms and immigrant songs to what shaped to be today. It was passionate, captivating and hypnotizing. The dancers executed the choreography fluently and with precision without losing the spontaneousness that is in the heart of tango.

And while I was lost in this magical journey I started to notice the techniques and the embraces and the steps. I saw where exactly the dancers put their hands, how close or distant they were, how they moved.

Having lessons on tango gave me a whole new perspective on the performance and I appreciated the dancers and the difficulty of what they did. Trust it is difficult not to kick each other when you dance so close and so fast. You will say that they are pros and I agree, but this doesn’t make it less difficult and I respect them a lot.

I was impressed by the costumes that were made by JeJean-Lucon Vito & Natalia Hills, first by their design and second by their number. I must have counted at least ten different costumes for various choreographies.

Generally, it was a great show and something tells me that it will not be the last tango performance I will attend this year.
