My Childhood Writing - #3 - Parents & River poems

in thebeast •  6 years ago

I have dug into my old files and have excavated my old childhood writings out of the antiquated file format they were saved in. I am copying them into new formats and decided that I should go ahead and put these out into the world. The "poems" and stories were all written 26 years ago when I was about 12 years old in 1992 and none of them were shown to anyone outside my family. Now that I am reading through them I am cringing, A LOT! I started to edit the wording but decided I'm better off leaving the writing as is since this was how I wrote at that time.

The first poem here is the one I remember precisely when it was created, the second I am unsure of when I wrote it but it sounds like it belongs on a greeting card. In 1990 my parents, myself, and my grandmother (my mom's mom) all rode the Amtrack train from Fresno California to New Orleans Louisiana. It was a couple days on the train that ran along the southern tier of the US though Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and into Louisiana.

While in New Orleans we went out on the Mississippi river on a paddle boat. I blatantly remember the dense brown water that was inches from going over the railing on the lowest level. We all were standing on the front upper deck in the wind and this poem popped into my head. It had me laughing something fierce and then my parents when I could talk long enough to tell them.

My memories from that trip are quite vivid to this day and there were some pretty cool things I saw and experienced. I will have to write up my memories of that trip for another post.

Parents
My poor parents
say to all their friends
we have to love him
cuz we're stuck with him

River
The rivers have rocks
The beaches have sand
You are like the water
Waving to the land
