Reputation is the only answer here. If they try to extort someone and then renege on the deal, nobody will ever pay out again. That's a trick you only get to play once.

What reputation if the identities of the people that make up the group of hackers is unknown?
By the way, I'm not a big fan of someone hacking into anybody's system for the purposes of extorting money. But I can't say I'm too sorry to see the shady deals done by governments and corporations coming to light.

Exactly this "darkoverlord" is just as bad as they are, maybe worse. I guess I better be careful or I might get hacked and my files destroyed. If this hacker is caught and killed, I hope s/he has some type of kill switch to get this information out to the public.
