THE DIARY GAME: 20, August 2020 - CONVINI

Hello to all steemians and hope that you’re having a nice day there in your country.

For today’s diary blog here are my participation:

I woke up late today, it’s already 9:45 am and I almost forgotten my appointment with my Japanese friend. Gladly I made it on time by hurrying.

I really had no time to cook food today so I just bought this chilled “paozu nikuman” or pao steamed bun for my meal today.

The seven eleven convenience store or “convini” I am currently working for my part time job. I have a scheduled work today from 5 pm up to 10 pm in the evening.

First, before entering the store we usually read the guidelines on how to say greetings, appreciation and politeness to customers. This is their way of training workers to establish a good relationship with the customers.

It’s been a busy night with lots of shoppers flocking the store in an alternate time... frying chicken, “karage bo” or chicken in a stick, american dog, “koroke”or croquette, potatoes, sausages and other foods at the same time doing the cashier work assisting customers paying for their groceries.

Before plastic bags are just for free to shoppers but starting last month of July all plastic containers are to be bought and used with the corresponding amount of 3 yen and 5 yen. In compliance with the world’s problem on eliminating or lessening the use of plastic disposal.

A lot of male shoppers bought cigarettes from one pack to one carton in a random way. The tabaco names are being identified by the number attached in each brand. 20 years and above are the buyers allowed to consume it and the age lower than 20 are prohibited from buying these vices same rule with the alcohol beverages.

When customers are few, we usually wash trays and parts of the coffee machine. Since it’s a hot day, buyers mostly preferred the cold coffee drinks and ice creams.

After work, we usually have 2 pieces of free foods to eat from store unsalable items so I picked up these 2 sandwiches for our morning breakfast tomorrow.

It’s a good thing to share foods rather than throwing. I heard that foods thrown out from convenience stores are being taken as foods for the animals of parks and zoos. A great kind of initiative helping animals to have free foods and lessen the composting garbage disposals. On the other hand the store owners must shoulder the charge for picking garbage hence complying with the city government rules on proper waste disposal.

People here are really obedient when it comes to discipline and government rules. A kind of attitude that must be followed.

When I first came here I was amazed at how good their garbage system with designated day to pick up the types of garbage. It's just I'm a bit confused about how to sort our trash so I do it correctly. After a while, I can get the hang of it and gladly abide to the garbage system. Plastics usage here for wrapping is little bit excessive in my opinion, good that they start to reduce plastic bag usage, also they upcycle/recycle the styrofoam/wrappers too.

Your diary gave me a good information of what a job at a convenience store! I always find them very complex and require high skills...( I am also amazed by the variety of cigarettes.)
I've always felt that over-packing in Japan is a big issue. I think the charge for plastic bugs is a small but major advance...
