Bangladesh in 1971 refers to the events surrounding the Bangladesh Liberation War, which took place from March 26, 1971, to December 16, 1971. The war was fought between the East Pakistan-based forces of the Awami League and West Pakistan, and resulted in the independence of East Pakistan as the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The conflict was triggered by the refusal of the West Pakistani government to allow the East Pakistan-based Awami League to form a government following the 1970 elections, in which the Awami League won a majority of seats in the National Assembly.

The war resulted in widespread atrocities, including the killing of an estimated 300,000 to 3 million Bangladeshi civilians by West Pakistani forces, and the displacement of up to 10 million refugees who fled to India. The international community, including the United States, initially remained neutral, but India eventually intervened, providing support to the Bangladesh forces. The intervention of the Indian military led to the surrender of the West Pakistani forces on December 16, 1971, and the establishment of an independent Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Liberation War remains a defining moment in the history of Bangladesh, and is celebrated every year on December 16 as Victory Day.
