"Hey! That's mine, give it back!"

you holler at the creature. Is it a wood sprite or fairy or dryad? you wonder to yourself.

The creature sneers at you, then it speaks in a voice filled with disgust, "This stuff is our stuff. It doesn't belong to you. This is tree. You made it treemeat. You should be meat for trees. You're disgusting, human. I should make paper out of you."

You're taken aback. You've always considered yourself a lover of nature. You support sustainability projects and you've planted and cared for your fair share of trees. Surely this creature must have you mistaken for some corporate-greed person. As you open your mouth to speak, it interrupts you.

"You think you love us. You don't. You use us. You kill us every day."

"I DON'T!" you manage to interject.

"LIES!" it shrieks, and then the whole forest is quiet. You didn't notice all the sounds of the forest before, but once the birds chirping and twittering, the sound of the wind, the faint lapping of the water all stop, the silence echoes noticeably. Everything is still, and even though the sun is still shining and your skin is hot, you feel a chill deep in your bones.

The little creature leaps from the branches of the tree and lands unnaturally at the base of the tree. There is no give as it hits the earth. It is as if, when it made contact, it became rooted. You are frozen, watching.

It stalks towards you, and as its feet leave and return to the ground with each step, you see roots reaching toward the earth.
