A Motivational Advice For New Steem Users: Don't Think Linear - Your Blog Grows Exponentially & The Journey's The Reward! πŸ’™

Energy and persistence conquer all things. - Benjamin Franklin

In a blogger's world these super powers are creativity and hard work.

The reason why many new users struggle on this platform, is that they don't look at the bigger picture and primarily focus on immediate success. Their expectations are far above realistically set targets, what can lead to a negative user experience.

Many leave before they even started.

Today - after 1.5 years on Steemit - I'm among the best 110 content creators with regards to reputation. I can tell you that the way to the top was never easy, but it gets easier over time: In the beginnings I had about 50 new followers per month, now there are 1,000 joining my blog every month.

Still every day is a new challenge, and every day I'm competing anew for attention, rewards and reputation. That's what I call #theeverydayproject.

Here's to the inestimable value of vision and patience!

@surfermarly getting started before the next surf session

The exponential growth theory

After hitting another two milestones in very few time, I had a deeper look at the numbers of my steemit blog.

When analyzing the number of followers over time, something really interesting catched my eye. While it took many months to recruit the very first 1,000, after having reached a certain level, the numbers started to literally take off.

Here's how my Steem followership has grown over time:

The red curves are the numbers forecasted for the future.

Maybe the forecast for the next 6 months is quite conservative :-)

I have a bet running with Asher @abh12345 who said that I'd reach 7,000 followers faster than him. It's gonna be a miserable fail, Ash - because you're much better in moving the masses and you know it - ha!

By the way everybody is invited to help me winning the bet (the prize carries the value of 1 Steem) by starting to follow @abh12345 :-)

Jokes aside what these numbers clearly show is that besides efforts we need patience! Of course you can use voting bots in order to boost your content and provide it with more visibility, but that won't help you to grow in the long run. It's rather an expensive straw fire!

I've never used any boosters and I haven't paid for any upvote in 18 months, and look where I stand now.

Organic growth, generated by users who find and follow you because they love your content, is priceless! Obviously building an audience takes time. But show me one person that has become tremendously successful in a business without dedication! ............................. OK, I see it's hard to reply to that one :-)

Only organic growth is sustainable growth!

One of the great benefits of gradually building an audience is that you will live the overwhelming feeling of reaching important milestones over and over again.

Over time the invervals between one important step and another become shorter. That doesn't mean that it gets easier to accomplish them. While your visibility grows, you automatically receive more attention - thus your own expectations start to increase again. Sometimes you'll even find yourself being as impatient as in the beginnings!

With more success comes more pressure to deliver. But then reaching a milestone will feel even more deserved.

Once you've passed a certain level make sure having enough champagne at home just in case :-)

@surfermarly celebrating her very first little milestone: 300 followers - yeah!

@surfermarly's Instagram post after reaching the first considerable Steem milestone

My 5,000 followers video even became my financially most successful blog post of all times - click the play button to watch it again

Lesson learned today: The journey's the reward!

Make sure that you're having a huge portion of fun on this platform right from the start, because the first months are usually the hardest.

Don't compare yourself to users who're already bringing thousands of followers from other networks with them. Their influencer status will provide them with special attention, and that's why their audience will grow much faster than yours.

Still: follow them! You will learn a lot from them in any case. Try to be like a sponge, learn from the best, improve your own skills and start to hunt them then :-)

Every time you look at accounts that have a higher reputation or larger number of followers, think about my words:

We all started from zero :-)

Much love and much success πŸ’™

SteemBirds Video Comment for @surfermarly

Oh my God, I love youuuu!!! That's so cool! Haha
Thank you so much!!!

I'll bring those crypto babes, promised :-)))

Inspirational post, thanks Marly! I guess it's the same with most things in life (and life itself, which is one great journey)...patience and persistence! And to turn it into 'the three p's'...some positivity as well!

Thank you! We can't ever add enough positivity, I fully agree!
Nice blog of yours by the way, we definitely share the same passion for the Ocean. Following you now :-)

For sure, keeping a positive mindset goes a long way! Yeah we definitely have our love for the ocean in common :) I'm planning to write some posts related to marine conservation etc, but I haven't gotten around to it (yet). Also, I do wonder how much interest there is on Steemit regarding such 'heavy' topics...

Alright, I'm hearing more and more people say not to waste your time with upvote bots. But care to give an opinion on spending money on steempower vs. just letting it build up organically?

Well if you have the money to invest, then powering up in SP is always a good idea since it will help you to grow faster. Still not everybody has these opportunities (including myself), and you can also build up your brand organically without investments even though it will take longer. I didn't power up anything and earned ~27,000 Steem by blogging in 18 months. That's more than a regular annual salary on my island so it means a lot to me. But you also need to know that I have been working daily on this platform since the very first day.

The most important part is: time :-)

Great post. I believe that you get what you put in. Very important is that you bring some value to the platform and that you "socialize", since this is social media:). Not everyone have desire to be successful on this platform, because they have other goals, but if you do than try to learn as much as you can from people who are already at the top like @surfermarly. Anyway congrats on all your achievements.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

I believe that you get what you put in.

Absolutely! Life's a circle most of the time :-)

Value is hard to define, since everyone has their own interpretation of what's valuable or rewardable and what is not. Besides all the financial incentives (e.g. curation rewards) whether someone likes (upvotes) your blog post or not has a lot to do with their state of mind. That's why I always try to provide the audience with something they didn't know, feel, realize, think or laugh about before - like an umbrella of services.

The more emotions you're able to address with one single post, the more people will supposedly appreciate it :-)

Thanks for your congratulations!

Congrats on 10,000SP and 5,000 followers -- both milestones I hope to reach some day. Thanks for the tips on what's gotten you there as well!

Thank you!!
Actually it's 6,000+ followers and 27,000 Steem all in all :-) I've cashed out some money during the past month in order to fulfill a dream in real life.

Holy cow, nice! That's fantastic. I have a dream in real life set as well = pay off student loans and a down payment on a house (it would be our first) for my family. Working towards it each and everyday here on Steemit!

Well then our dreams are pretty close. I'm saving money for my very first house, too :-) Steem can make it happen!

Cool! Yes, I really believe it can as well.

Quite motivational post for the new steemers like me. Every word you said is absolutely write, getting nothing in the start is very disappointing, It needs much courage to keep on steeming as you earn nothing from start, but everything take it's time to reach at the top, you can't just jump and climb on mountain, It needs steadiness and moral to do it. I hope I will do better on steemit like you...

Exactly. It needs some courage and discipline to keep going even though your ROI might not be the very best in the beginning.

When you start, you invest time for money. Once you start earning money, you'll try to save time by getting better and more efficient in what you're doing. Still it never becomes a routine, since every day is different :-)

Steem on!

Hi - you might want to get rid of the 'A' in the title before this gets locked in!

Karl.

Thank you for the suggestion,I will try hard and try to be unique with my comments.and may be this persistence let me achieve something better on this platform .

My plan is to actually have a loyal follower instead of having a tonns of follower that may end up been dormant, you are one of those who i am loyal to as a follower, with your inspiring content.
I think i can stop steeming because it is now an addiction.

I sometimes feel down when I see people getting support for nonsense things on steemit.. but I still do believe that this site is gonna be better in the future. I have loved your post a lot!

you create a great post.....i like it...... i waiting for your next post....i wish for your best of luck brother

congratulations ....... Proceed forward be victorious

Boom πŸ’£

Is there any better superpower in life than hard work and patience? I doubt it 🀟🏼

Love to see the transparency in your journey, you serve as an inspiration to many πŸ™πŸΌ

And as you say, take your focus away from the top and just learn to smell the flowers along the journey instead, eventually you get there ✌🏼

So true SM and more words of wisdom "the journey is the reward!" I think setting those smaller goals and having loads of fun watching them turn into much larger milestones is the key. Patience, time and persistence is the way to go as all of our steem journeys unfold. Like an old man once said to me " son, take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves...." Congrats to you! I learned many things from you and have very much enjoyed watching you grow here on steemit! Be well!

Yes i agreed with your wonderful article @surfermarly.

i will done upvote..

It was very pleasant to read, ....And Yes, good things do not come quickly, even I see it when I make pictures. In order to succeed, I try a little bit every day... and trying is half wins.

I have a bet running with Asher @abh12345 who said that I'd reach 7,000 followers faster than him. It's gonna be a miserable fail, Ash - because you're much better in moving the masses and you know it - ha!

I'm calling vote collusion!!! Haha!

Nice plan to seal the win there!

You are totally right about the exponential growth, I can't believe how fast followers are climbing!

I have another bet planned.. how about total SP of followers? First person to be
Skiing and vlogging? πŸ˜›

This is great motivation for the new starters! Stick at it everyone and grind out a result!
