The Game Room: Dawn of the Tiberium Age

in thegameroom •  6 years ago

Welcome to the first entry of The Game Room. It is one of the short series I talked about in my previous ULog. I plan on writing about games that I play when I have free time.

Today, I want to talk about a standalone Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun mod called Dawn of the Tiberium Age. You may visit their website on Moddb at https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dawn-of-the-tiberium-age. This game is completely free to play, including online.

When it comes to real-time strategy games, I grew up with Command and Conquer. I have played every single game in the franchise minus C&C4, or Tiberian Twilight. You can thank EA for destroying a beloved series. I will share some screenshots from the game menus to give you an idea of what you could be signing up for when you download this mod.

Main menu

Dawn of the Tiberium Age, will be referred to as DTA from hereon, allows gamers to revisit the good old RTS days by offering them a four-way battle between GDI, Nod, Allies, and Soviets. You read correctly. Those four factions can fight each other! Obviously, there are certain limitations due to the fact the mod was based on Tiberian Sun, but the team has done a great job in putting together a working game.

DTA has several game modes that address different demographics and preferences:

New Mission

List of currently available campaigns

New Mission is basically campaign mode. In DTA, Classic Mode refers to the more vanilla versions of Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert mechanics, in terms of stats and units. Enhanced Mode is where you'll see the unique spin the mod team has put into place to make their project stands out.

CnC Net

I was never good at the PvP aspect of RTS games. However, DTA offers you the chance to play against other players as well as finding games to some of the other C&C titles such as Yuri's Revenge and its equally favored mod, Mental Omega.

Skirmish

dta multi menu.png

dta map list.png

Skirmish is where I spend most of my time when I do play DTA. The LAN option seems to be a legacy feature for those of us who are nostalgic about a bunch of nerdy guys crammed into a room with their computers. The same multiplayer options can be found when you head over for online play. The sheer number of toggles offer an insane number of possibilities for each game.

You may choose to play as GDI, Nod, Allies, or Soviets. Some people have no preference and a random option is available. In fact, if you just want to see AIs duking it out with each other, you may set yourself as a Spectator. Besides the Default game mode for Skirmish, there are others such as Co-op, Scavenge, etc. These should be familiar terms for those who have played any Command and Conquer games.

As you can see, you can select starting locations. The interesting part about DTA is that you can have 8 players on a 2-player map. The game allows it. However, it can cause the game to crash sometimes.

There are many multiplayer options and most of them are intuitive. The only ones that may require clarification are Extreme AI and Turtling AI. Extreme AI means that the AIs will "tech up" and utilize multiple production facilities. Turtling AI means that they attack much less frequently and tend to camp within their bases.

Extra

dta stats.png

Extra shows game statistics and more importantly, a gateway to the map editor. I personally am not familiar with Final Sun, so I seldom use the program. However, for those of you who like to make your own fun time, it is a game that keeps on giving!

Options

At first glance, this should be the boring section. You could be right, except the team did put some effort into making it less boring than it should be. The main perks of this menu is changing the main menu display and choosing Red Alert and/or Tiberian sound effects based on your personal preference.

Conclusion

If you enjoyed old school C&C games, DTA is definitely a great addition to your library. It caters to both PvP and casual commanders. For me, it satisfy my quick gaming itch due to time constraints. Feel free to download or even support this project!

Hi @enforcer48
Unfortunately I do not play games so I do not know how to comment. :)
I will read the articles on your other topic. :)

You got upvote = x2.5BID + 10 bonus upvote from @hoaithu. Thank for @enforcer48 used

Haha it's okay. It's a really niche game.

I have been also spent a lot of time with games. But it is the past. =)

Oh my! Command & Conquer was my best loved real time strategy I grew on. This game was some sort of revolution in gaming industry of those years. This was the first game I played with my friend using old dial phone Internet scheme with strange sounds while connecting to it. I still remember those Kane words: He who controls the past, commands the future. He who commands the future, conquers the past Though it was also well-known Warcraft 2 at the same time I always preferred C&C for its realness, that means for me and it seems for you too @enforcer48 it was much more interesting to fight for people, instead of fighting for orcs or any other heroes of might and magic))) I never knew it is still working and developing as a game. I thought it has gone away somewhere together with my childhood, now I see they both are closer to me than I ever expected! Thank you for sharing it.

Kane lives in death!

I also like the Warcraft series as well as Heroes of Might and Magic. Heroes was a hard game for me, though. It was like playing 4D chess. All I can say is dang Mighty Gorgons.

Dawn of the Tiberium Age is a fan-made mod. It's standalone and free to play. It's a good time killer.

Wow, some serious C&C nostalgia there! I seem to remember there is a c&C game sitting on my backlog (I think it was the last one). I really should just go back and finish it...

Nah, leave it there. The last one, Tiberian Twilight, or C&C4 is awful. Don't do it.

I know, I heard that! But I just have to finish it! I was there at the beginning, I'll be there for the end!

Well, for the experience. You must stay away from the Dark Side afterwards!

Excellent post idea buddy! I think there’s going to be a lot of people who will like these gaming posts. :) I’ve never played this game though

If you have never played any real-time strategy game before, it may be a bit of a steep learning curve, but the game is free and you could start with the easy difficulty.

real time strategy

Like what? Faxanadu? Zelda? Are those the style of games?

More along the lines of Age of Empires and StarCraft.

Hmmmmm yep I’ve never played any games like those then.

You are missing out!

I have been in love with command and conquer series since around firestorm (first game in the series I played) though I have played most of the games (there is only 1 game in the series I haven't played is Sole Survivor)

The only problem with standalone mods in my opinion is that, in my experience, there aren't communities built for modding them (ironic huh) where as with modding the base game you can use different methods to get multiple mods active or to consolidate the mods.

It's a solid mod, but I agree with your statement about standalone mods. Mental Omega is probably more popular. Also, A Path Beyond, the Renegade mod is doing well even after all these years.

As for Sole Survivor, the Scavenge game mode in Skirmish sort of covers that.

this is very intersting post.
