Three days prior...looking into her crystal ball, his grandmother moaned in annoyance but was clever and knew how to fix his luck... Smores Gramcracker the Witch made a special talisman which soured the luck of everyone around Roland. If his luck was that crappy she could at least try to passive aggressively bless him.
